Cost of average summer holiday abroad?

goldpendant · 13/01/2019 07:38

DH and I took the kids to Menorca last summer (just before schools finished). DC1 is now 5 so we are bound by term times, and DH is struggling to grasp the cost increase in the same holiday....

One week in a lovely self catering apartment next to the beach (pool, garden terrace, restaurant on-site) is £2150 for 4 adults and 2 kids. Last year it was nearer £1000. Flights I've found for about £150!

We can afford the holiday it's just that DH doesn't want to pay that much having paid loads less before.

Can I ask if you think that's about right, too much, or even good value? It's our first one in summer holiday time so trying to get a guage of the prices.

TIA

Tell DH to for holidays himself.

Traveling at half term I have noticed it is cheap to stay for an extra week.

Sounds about right cost wise. We went to Majorca self catering but in a nice hotel complex with 2 children in August last yr and with flights and car hire it was £5k all in. But that was for 2 weeks.

elliesm98 · 13/01/2019 08:01

£1200 to lanazarote for 2 adults, one 8 month old. Including spending money. This was September though but lanzarote is hot all year round so we could of went anytime

elliesm98 · 13/01/2019 08:01

Would it not be cheaper for you to go during term time and just pay the fine? I believe it’s around £120

Jellybean100 · 13/01/2019 08:04

Yep was looking for 2 adults 2 kids next summer and for 2 weeks all inclusive it’s approx 4K and 3500 for 1 week- so May aswell do the 2 weeks. I used to think big 4-5k holidays were luxury holidays in faraway shores. Now they’re European holidays with kids clubs.

tinytreefrog · 13/01/2019 19:46

The trick is to book really early. I booed in October and I'm paying £1300 for 4 of us DC age 14 and 11, self catering in Portugal in august. It's not a fancy place, but gets good reviews and has three pools to choose from. Price for it has gone up now though.

somewhereovertherain · 13/01/2019 20:05

Last there or four European Summer holidays in August cost less than 2k - 2adults 2kids. - Sweden, Spain, France, Belgium/Netherlands

£3000 all inclusive for a week in Majorca in 2017. My husband has struggled with the cost too, and then complains when the accommodation doesn't meet his very high standards!

Nix32 · 13/01/2019 20:11

Forgot to say that was for two adults and two children.

Mummyshark2018 · 13/01/2019 20:48

Last year we booked an all inclusive in hotel on a Greek island, 2 adults 1 child and paid £1695. This year booked to go away again all in, 1 week menorca , during half term and paid £1700. We are flying from an airport further away as our local airport was very expensive (due to half term dates).
What is the actual cost for your own family unit?

Threeminis · 13/01/2019 20:51

This year we're doing all inclusive in Turkey. Two weeks £4000. In July
Although it is a bit more as I upgraded the room to a duplex as didn't want to all be in one room.

goldpendant · 13/01/2019 23:32

Our share will be approx £1500, DH's parents are joining us 😬 then the flights on top. It's a lovely place, and doesn't seem too steep to me given its summer hols!

Anyway the good news is I managed to persuade him, and it's all booked!

I can't seem to get below £4500 for family of 4, staying half board for 10 nights in Majorca! 😱

PizzaPlanet · 18/01/2019 19:25

Mainland Spain is often a bit cheaper than Menorca, especially Costa Brava

Bermbelle · 18/01/2019 19:33

We’ve just paid 5250 for 2 weeks 4 star all inclusive in august. We’ve been to previously. Reputable chain in Mallorca based in the north east of
The island . Plenty for the children to do but still has a premium vibe. I priced Ibiza and it was £7000 for Sensatori. I just couldn’t bring myself to pay that for a family of 4.
It is what it is tied by the school holidays for a number of reasons this year and demand is high!

mnahmnah · 18/01/2019 19:36

We’re paying £2400 nine nights all-inclusive in Gran Canaria in the Easter holidays. It’s the same place we went to last year, so can confirm that it’s lovely! That’s for two adults two children

anniehm · 18/01/2019 19:44

Seems about right. Flights are £££ in school hols, I would say it's actually a good deal.

anniehm · 18/01/2019 19:48

Ps for this year (kids are adults but we are really restricted due to work) it's coming in at £4800 full board but no alcoholic drinks. Hoping it will come down - checking each week.

WreckTangled · 18/01/2019 19:53

We've got a week in August in a villa with private pool, 4 adults and 2 dc £1600 including flights. Need to add car hire but pil's are paying that. This is mainland Spain. It's taken me quite a lot of searching and holding my breath for flights!

sansou · 18/01/2019 20:23

May half term is a great week to go. Europe isn’t on holiday so it’s mid season prices. Weather in southern EUrope is definitely hot - at least mid 20’s if not hotter. You only have to get cheap flights which may be too late now (cheaper bought the previous Sept/Oct).

theSnuffster · 18/01/2019 21:13

We have booked to go to Mallorca in May half term (we actually leave 2 days before term ends, one of those is a TD day so the children only miss one day- and we saved not far off £1k by doing so.) £1700 all inclusive for 2 adults and 2 children.

millimat · 19/01/2019 23:00

Prices in school holidays are just wrong. Especially when you're a teacher!

millimat · 19/01/2019 23:02

Posted too soon. I mean that when you're a teacher you can't even take children out of school for one day to cut the cost.

BreevandercampLGJ · 19/01/2019 23:05

Flights for two adults and a teen into Malaga , £1,500

Three bed roomed apartment in Nerja with wifi and air con £2,000

Spending money about £2,000

Money well spent in my opinion.

Tell your DH to jog on.

millimat · 20/01/2019 21:07

5.5k for a summer holiday in Spain? Really?
