Would it be madness to go to Florida Keys/Gulf Coast/Everglades in August?

Looking at another holiday idea in case Canada doesn't come off!

Been to Florida in August before (for the parks) and while we loved the luxury of the air conditioned Villa & pool, we really struggled with the heat whenever we went out & about.

Idea is to fly to Miami, have a few days on the keys then head to a Villa on the gulf coast which we can do a few days out from incl Everglades. Anyone does this?

I grew up spending childhood holidays on the gulf coast (literally the last point above the Keys). Being near the sea gives you less stifling heat but it's still hot and humid. Definitely more bearable than midday heat at Disney though. Everglades are incredible. Is it just adults going or adults and kids?

We usually go in August(because of school holidays) to Key West, but it is really hot & I'm becoming less tolerant of it. It's even boiling hot in the evening.
But I am menopausal & if you don't mind the heat you'll be ok.

It's adults & teens. Do you mean Everglades are incredible to see or incredible hot?!

@Wimbledonwomble haha well both but I meant incredible to experience. As long as you don't book a tour between 12 and 3 then you'll be fine. Do you know where abouts you're wanting to stay on the Gulf?

@whatalearningcurve. Was thinking Cape Coral area because Villas are much cheaper there. I'm guessing that's because it's less accessible but the aim would be to spend a fair amount of time enjoying the Villa rather than lots of trips.

We spend every summer in Sanibel (very near Cape Coral) and it is hot but you have to adapt your activities to suit. Lots more lazing about dipping in and out of the pool than if we go at Easter when we ride bikes and get out and about more.

Have been there in August several times and weather wise it was fine, downpour around 3pm and very hot but bearable, however we’d now completely avoid late August and Early September due to getting caught up in several hurricanes over the years and being evacuated.

I think you’ll get eaten alive by bugs in the Everglades.

We went a few years ago it's hot but you are on holiday

My sis was there in August, theme parks at 40 degrees, it wasn't fun they definitely overreached. Have you thought about cape cod? Might be a little cooler. Assateague, flying in to Washington which is a great city with teens, but has plenty indoors like the Smithsonian to cool down in the heat of the day. I have been a few times in August, it is really hot with some spectacular thunderstorms!

Wimbledonwomble · 13/01/2019 09:34

We have been to Cape Cod Winner and yes the weather was perfect - hot enough to swim but not so hot you couldn't walk around. That's why we're also looking at Canada as seems to have similar temperatures.

You said yourself you’ve been in August before and struggled with the heat 🤔

Temperatures in Key West are higher than Orlando.

I am in Canada, the far east coast is a little cooler than cape cod, gets a bit hotter towards Toronto/montreal, about 26-31 in summer a lot more manageable than Florida. If you were thinking of Canada and enjoyed Cape Cod you could fly into Halifax out of Montreal and do a trip through the Cabot trail, Bay of fundy, PEI and on to Tadoussac (best whale watching in the world, apparently) and Quebec City then Montreal? They do lovely bike tours there round the islands in the city. Cheap Lobster Benedict, great cheese, wine and poutine. Plus the parks are lovely round there, lots of canoeing the fur trade, the history the landscape, canoeing, swimming in lakes. I love Florida too, I agree with others, the Everglades are amazing, but we went in March. I suppose it depends on what you want, if you want a chilled out gorgeous villa to do very little Florida would work at that time of year. If you are a more activities person More temperate might suit. I always think I want chilled out, but I get somewhere chilled out and get very restless!
