Can anyone recommend days out that would have info or relate to ancient Egypt. We are in Surrey and happy to travel. It's sons new topic for the term and I thought it would be nice to do a family day out and tie it in with his topic and do a bit of learning at the same time. Was thinking London museums etc, our son is 9 but we also have a 5 and 7 year old!

British Museum for mummies etc.

UtterlyDesperate · 11/01/2019 17:52

British Museum every time, op - the mummy room will probably interest all three, but will probably be enough on its own for the youngest.

Definitely the British Museum as they have an incredible Ancient Egypt exhibition. I took my 4yo and he loved it (although was a bit scared of some of the mummies)

There's a pyramid in Walton on Thames' churchyard. Monument to Dame and Baronet Frederick.

Crocodiles and hippos at the zoo, then a visit to some wetlands with loads of reeds etc?

Buy some cheap bandages or improvise with loo roll and mummify one another Grin

And Cleopatra's Needle on the Embankment.

Definitely British Museum, fantastic collection.

British Museum is super busy- very hectic with 3 little ones, you might like to consider a day out at the Horniman Museum in South London they do have some Egyptian artefacts including mummies, but they’ve also got lovey gardens, a butterfly house and aquarium and little animal corner. Always lots of kids activities.

AnnaMariaDreams · 11/01/2019 18:19

DS loved the British Egyptian galleries museum age 5.

flissfloss65 · 11/01/2019 18:23

Maybe quieter at the Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archeology. It’s on the UCL campus near the British Museum. Loads to see and helpful staff.

most large city musuems have an Egyption collection.

The Ashmolean in Oxford could be a good option. If you made a weekend of it the Pitt Rivers Musuem is worth a visit, Oxford Castle, Botanic Gardens, open top bus tour - lots to do

thenextsmallthing · 11/01/2019 18:29

The British Museum used to let you have a schools pack on Egypt if you asked at information. I haven't been for a couple of years so might be worth emailing them first.

Volluto · 11/01/2019 18:32

HumptyNumptyNooNoo · 11/01/2019 18:34

There's an exhibition that's on all year round in Dorchester Dorset too ( and the dinosaur museum too that most kids love aswell )

SquirmOfEels · 11/01/2019 18:36

If you are in London for the British Museun, also go to the Petrie

www.ucl.ac.uk/culture/petrie-museum

It's even better than the British Museum!

MiceSqueakCatsMeow · 11/01/2019 18:42

I helped on a trip to the British Museum. It's really good. Lots to see. We also went to look at the body in the bog man.

noideaatallreally · 11/01/2019 18:44

The opening times are limited but a visit to www.highclerecastle.co.uk/
would be excellent. It's when they film Downton Abbey, but it's also home to the Caernarfons, and has a replica of KV62 - Tutankamun's tomb.

noideaatallreally · 11/01/2019 18:47

Also, agree that Petrie is amazing for ancient Egypt, but iits really aimed at academics - I think the BM is better for younger children, though the Egyptian Gallery is usually really noisy. The exhibition of Nebuman's tomb (stunning art) is usually quieter than the mummy section.

Wow thanks for all the replies everyone!! I think we will check out the British museum then as we haven't been before! Tend to go to the natural history usually when we go up-to town (boys all time favourite!!) Sounds like there's lots to see and it's child friendly! Tbh at weekends everything's busy so not much escaping it and they are at a good age now where it won't be too stressful as they are that bit older and no buggy etc to navigate!!

I would love to do a weekend away but perhaps later in the year as we are due a baby next month 😊
