Germany in August

Trying to navigate booking my first August holiday (now son is in school). Confused Were already going to Denmark in Whit so don't want to an absolute fortune. Maybe £1.5k for 3 flights, accom and car hire.

I was originally considering taking the car over to France to a gite but with Brexit woes, it's not something I'd book until there is more certainty. And we've spent three years dodging French air traffic control strikes, so will likely give France a miss this year.

I therefore was considering Germany, as my husband is half German and we'd like to discover the country more than the cities we've done.

Can anyone recommend a Summer destination and I'll look at Air BnB/campsites. We can fly easily into Hamburg, Munich or Berlin from Manchester with EasyJet. I want to avoid Ryanair.

I'm guessing somewhere drivable from Munich in the South. Happy with self catering, I just want a change of scene, ideally access to a pool/lake and some nice weather.

Thanks in advance

We usually go to Bavaria in August ( DH also half German - dual nationality now due to Brexit).
We find flying to Nuremberg cheaper than Munich, also from Manchester. However, that WAS Ryanair but it was fine.
we stayed in Leuterhausen which is about an hour away from the airport. Airbnb is ok but we also look at Bavarian farm stays.
Freiberg and the Schwarzwald is also great but you need to fly to Basle and drive form there.
Love Germany, it’s not very popular with Brits yet but we always have a brilliant time there and it’s pretty cheap too. With flights, car hire and accommodation last August it was around £1000 for a family of 4

@Hoppinggreen Thanks got the info. Have checked Ryanair (shudder!) and their flights from Manchester to Nuremberg stop in the Spring. So really will be an EasyJet flight.

Great tip about Basel, but can you take hire cars abroad?

Great Summer price by the way at £1000!

Hi there.

Look up Baldeneysee Essen in Germany. I used to go there in my teens to visit my mums best friend. Beautiful in the summer with the lakes for boating and swimming

Im sure we flew in August to Nuremberg with Ryanair but maybe it’s changed this year, sorry about that.
We didn’t hire a car the times we flew to Basle for Freiburg , we did city breaks for the Xmas markets. I think with airports near the border taking a hire car into a different country is ok if you make it clear and check you are insured. We fly to Faro 2 or 3 times a year and go to Spain to stay and a couple of years ago we flew to Geneva and drove to theFrench Alps with a hire car. They are much less hung up on borders in mainland Europe than we are here I find
We usually go to Bavaria in the summer
Not a lot of use am I?

@Hoppinggreen thanks for your thoughts about car hire, that's good to know it's no a complete no-no.

Had a look last night and found reasonable priced flights to Munich.

Then started looking at accommodation and got rather overwhelmed! For years we've mainly done campsite holidays in France/Italy as we like the set up, facilities on site and flexibility of self catering.

Looking at Bavaria, I've found mainly apartments but mainly without outdoor space rather than a bigger unit.

A few places I looked at were Erding (town outside Munich), Fussen, Tergensee, Chimsee, Lake Constance. A quick look at Nuremberg area too. All locations picked up off other Mumsnet threads.

A lot of the lakes seem booked up (I appreciate this will be Germans booking way in advance).

Most appreciate if you can advise on any areas to hone in on. We just want a base for a week where we can easily travel to different places. Being able to enjoy some outdoor space/play areas for my son would be fantastic bonus.

Erding is lovely, DH was born there and we’ve been a few times. Stayed in a hotel though so not what you want.
Unfortunately the accommodation we have found does tend to be on the small side in that area. The place we went to last August was wonderful BUT we said we might not go again as it was too cramped
Try Airbnb, I’ve found a few in Bavaria that way. It’s not uncommon for people in Germany to have a granny flat( usually basement) so plenty for rent.
Look at Ferienwohungen Ballheim in Leuterhausen. Nearer Nuremberg than Munich but still doable. The family who run it are lovely and as I said it was ideal apart from the size but if they have a larger unit available and with one child it may be ok for you.
It was a brilliant base to explore from as well as having everything you need in the town too. We are considering going at Easter if we can get one of the bigger units.

Thanks @Hoppinggreen I'll take a look at that

Lake Constance is really lovely and not that far from Munich (easier to fly into Zurich though - although you'd need to check the hire car situation especially as CH isn't in the EU or EEA but it must happen all the time that people want to go from there into Germany or Austria).

Freiburg and the Black Forest is also great and again you could fly via Basel (or Strasbourg).

Hamburg is amazing but the south of Germany will probably have better weather and if you are going to Denmark anyway you might want something a bit different as North Germany isn't that different to Denmark.

Berlin is very interesting to visit.

Alternatively you could try the Kinderhotels in Austria.
