Sorrento in April - is it suitable for young kids?

Hi
We are trying to book somewhere for a week at Easter, we have never been to Italy but would love to!!
We have found reasonable price flights & an apartment 5 minutes walk from Sorrento Centre. We have 2 boys aged 6 & 4, would Sorrento be a suitable destination for them or is it more a trip for just adults?
The apartment does not have a pool but is 5 minute walk from the beach.
Would we be better booking a hotel/apartment with a pool or is there enough in the general area to keep us amused?
Thanks 😀

I've only been there once but I didn't get the impression that it's really child centered. There are lots of restaurants, including those where you sit out beside the pavement. There's not much beach. There's a boat that goes to Capri which is quite rocky with some nice views but dc wouldn't be interested. You need to do a lot of research tbh. (I went in April and we had some torrential rain).

Watch the DC on the roads. Not a lot of pavement in some places. It's typically hilly and narrow. But stunning x

DeadBod · 08/01/2019 22:42

It's a nice place for trips to Capri or Pompeii but there are probably better places to go with children as there's not much to do in Sorrento for them. Dh and I loved it as a first holiday alone.

KimchiLaLa · 08/01/2019 22:45

I wouldn't take my DD personally. I think Amalfi, Sorrento, Capri etc is very much a non kid destination. You'd want to enjoy the outdoor restaurants and have a nice aperol in the sun :). But I know people have done it.

GinandGingerBeer · 08/01/2019 22:48

Italy is still quite cool at that time of year, I've been in early May and it wasn't sun bathing weather.
It's probably not great for young kids, they'll be very welcome in restaurants etc of course and the ice creams are great, but the traffic is crazy, it's very busy, more of a sight seeing place than a beach holiday.

If you’re going to want to go to the historical sites it would be wasted on the kids, and spoil your enjoyment of them.

Also they wont appreciate the scenery.

Might get tired walking up Vesuvius etc

They would be fussed over in all the restaurants but I would really wait until they are old enough to know what Pompeii actually is and be wowed by it (it IS a wow kind of place)

CurlyhairedAssassin · 08/01/2019 22:56

And it’s not really a beach type destination

In April with 2 little ones I would choose the Canaries.

minipie · 08/01/2019 23:01

I have same age DC as you and considered the Amalfi area for this April... then came to all the conclusions mentioned above! Think we’ll save it for when they are older.

We have ended up booking somewhere in Crete, though also considered Cyprus (which is apparently a bit warmer).

Canaries are most reliable weather wise but we’ve been there once and can’t get excited about returning.

If you want to go to Italy Lake Garda is much better at that time of year for young children.. The beach may look.great but it probably isn't. Especially not in April. With a 4 and 5 year old I wouldn't consider it.

Abkbjbjb · 09/01/2019 17:23

Thank you so much for all your responses! Really appreciate it 😀. Think we can rule out Sorrento then for several years!!
Back to the drawing board..... I agree about Canaries-although it's pretty much guaranteed sunshine the places just don't really do it for me!!
Any other suggestions welcome 😊x

I know. We aren't Canaries either. What's Cape Verde like?

minipie · 09/01/2019 18:01

Just come back from Marrakech (family friendly hotel just outside the town) which was good

IamIwas · 09/01/2019 18:04

I wouldn’t take children. It is full of middle aged and retired couples (not being ageist, just fact.)

user1468942365 · 09/01/2019 18:07

Fair enough!

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 09/01/2019 18:24

We weren't particularly excited by the thought of the Canaries, but did a week in Lanzarote in Playa Blanca last year and really enjoyed it. DC loved hotel with pool (not really our usual kind of holiday), and some very family friendly day trip options.

I wouldn't do Sorrento with kids (though Pompeii is amazing once they're older). Ischia is nice (fly into Naples and get the ferry), but i'd want warm weather for it).

LoopyLoonyLuna · 09/01/2019 19:05

Sorrento and the Amalfi coast is lovely but I wouldn’t take small children and especially not if you don’t have access to a pool - it’s not really a beach resort. It’s more of an adult sightseeing and going to nice restaurants type holiday.

Spain is my favourite place to take small children - particularly less busy parts like Costa de La Luz or Costa de Almeria - Mojacar and surrounding resorts are nice, great wide beaches, pretty little towns not too many Brits! Good mix of sightseeing for adults and beach/water park fun for kids. Plus the Spanish are so child friendly, eating out is easy. And very cheap compared to Italy!

Nellyelora · 09/01/2019 19:55

How about Sardinia? It's Italian but has beautiful beaches and a short flight. I'm not sure about the weather in April though.

Wolfcub · 09/01/2019 20:08

My 3.5 year old loved it. Was treated beautifully by every restaurant and on the hotel, they were great with him. He loved the boat ride to amalfi (I did not). He walked up Vesuvius. We mainly carried him around Pompeii. He liked the train to Herculaneum and looking round there. We did do ice cream every day though

1hello2hello · 10/01/2019 14:58

Another vote for Sardinia. Look at the Agriturismo sites some are gorgeous.

Do not reconsider Sorrento. The beach is 2 foot square !

anniehm · 10/01/2019 15:14

It's a typical Italian resort - kids very welcome but things aren't set up for children exactly. Check out the beach situation as they often charge. Kids always are made very welcome in restaurants etc but often opening times are quite late into the evening for instance. I highly recommend holiday parks if you want facilities, stayed in one near Venice which multiple pools, kids club and free sandy beach access.

anniehm · 10/01/2019 15:16

To be honest we just took our kids where we wanted to go! They (looking back) really loved sightseeing etc and choose those sorts of holidays as young adults. We backpacked around Alaska at that age. Think outside the box!

recently · 10/01/2019 15:17

Most beaches don't open until after Easter in Italy. (I mean the private ones which most are).

CurlyhairedAssassin · 10/01/2019 18:24

anniehm: it depends on the child! A 6 and 4 year old aren’t going to want to stand and listen to the tour guide going into great detail about the various parts Of Pompeii for example. It’s a huge place too so sod carrying a child round cos they got tired, pick a holiday that suits their needs better, I say.

If I am only going to go to a place once in my life and do loads of historic sites I don’t want to be doing it with whingeing kids saying they’re bored, so that I miss half of it.

If there is a cafe culture I don’t want to have to keep little ones entertained for 2 and a half hours while I try and watch the world go by while they ask “what are we doing next?” 50 million times.

Different if you can afford to go back again sans enfants but I couldn’t afford to so I think it’s more sensible to go somewhere a bit more child-friendly when they are tiny and wait for the other stuff till they are teens or something.
