Looking for some suggestions for our next holiday destination. Will be my husband and I along with our 4 year old and 1 year old boys. These are the main criteria:

  • No more than a 4 hour flight from London
  • Warm enough to swim and sunbathe at end of June but not absolutely scorching
  • Sandy beaches with some facilities but as unspoilt as is still possible for them to be (one or two restaurants with toilets would be ideal)
  • At least 10 or so restaurants in the village/town
  • No English bars/English breakfasts/neon signs everywhere
  • Places to go for days out - favourite activities are wildlife and nature related things and boat trips although we're open to most things.

Last few years we've been to

  • Tossa de Mar in the Costa Brava and Alghero in Sardinia - both larger places than we would usually choose but liked the old towns, beaches in Sardinia were great
  • Alykanas, Zante - lovely as long as we avoided the main high street as that was a bit too neon/English for us
  • Paleokastritsa, Corfu - nice but resort was a bit too spread out, we like to have a centre, although a small one ideally

Please help if you have any ideas, I can't seem to find anywhere that sounds quite right at the moment!

Corsica. French & feels it but Italian influences on food. Beaches even more stunning than Sardinia, especially west coast south of Porto Vecchio.

Sousse in Tunisia if you like culture, good food and great history. It's a fantastic destination that I love dearly, it's my (unofficial) adopted second nationality 🇹🇳, absolutely love the country.

What about the Scillies ? One of the most beautiful unspoilt places I've ever been , we had 8 month old with us in a prom which was fine island hopping with a little life jacket . The main island has restaurants etc , worth a look if you're after something different -get the Paddington to Penzance and off you go 😀

coco2891 · 08/01/2019 00:00

*in a pram . Plenty of wildlife over there too !

You're probably thinking of a hotel but this small and very unspoilt holiday park ticks most of your boxes. Corsica will be warm enough but not unbearably hot. It's less than a mile to the nearest little coastal town (Solenzara) which is very traditional and doesn't have much in English at all apart from a tourist info centre.

Ooh, thanks for the ideas so far. Will definitely look into all of those further. Any more ideas still much appreciated. I may be able to make a list for the next few years after this 😂

Have spoken to OH and have some more recommendations for you!

Potinatx in Ibiza (it's on the NE coast and away from clubbers/youngsters). Surprising lack of tourists (especially English) too and fab food. Also Cala Gracio in Ibiza. It's 2km from SAN Antonio Town but it's a different world (although I sadly suspect it's beauty and accessibly isn't as much a secret since we've been - trip advisor a must with this one).

Madeira, with a footnote it's a friend who has been there who loves it.

About Tunisia, check the Marhaba Palace hotel in Sousse, personally recommend it. We have always loved the Tour Khalef hotel nearby but has been bought by another chain, and the jury is out after their first year in charge.

If you do go here in June, see you there!

SimplySteve · 09/01/2019 00:44

*Grr spelling. Portinatx in Ibiza....

SimplySteve · 09/01/2019 05:26

Made a mistake, it's Marhaba BEACH not Palace in Sousse (https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/HotelReview-g295401-d316772-Reviews-MarhabaaBeach-SousseSousseeGovernorate.html). Will teach me to pay more attention after being awake 72 hours!

Thanks so much for the ideas. Sousse looks lovely. Will definitely be checking it out further.

Finikounda in the Peloponnese. Very Greek.

ManchesterMum63 · 13/01/2019 23:44

Kalkan in SE Turkey... beautiful town (like a big village) incredibly family-friendly/over-run with restaurants/cafes and lovely shops... the town beach is pebbly but shallow with good facilities/sandy beaches 20 mins away/several beach clubs in Kalkan... lots to do and see nearby...

ManchesterMum63 · 13/01/2019 23:46

Oh and perfect for boat trips... and if you like the 'old town' feel it's perfect...

LijomaKatie · 14/01/2019 16:20

Have you thought about Croatia? Beautiful old towns to explore, incredible food and loads of family-friendly things to do – plus crystal clear waters to boot! Much of the coastline is pebble beaches but this didn't detract from our experience. We loved it! You can check out the exact details of our holiday to Croatia on Lijoma.com.

Sicily is beautiful. We stayed in an agriturismo (farmstay) with a pool, playground and private beach. Just a few other children around and an orange grove for the kids to pick from on their way to the beach. You'll probably need a hire car for an agriturismo though.

FaceLikeAPairOfTits · 16/01/2019 16:41

That sounds lovely, @Nomad86, would you mind posting the details?

Menorca

Further up the Costa Brava from Tossa are prettier , smaller resorts. I love Calella de Palafrugell or LlaFranc or the beach resorts down from Begur. Further up near the French border Cadaques is gorgeous.
