Billund/Legoland/Lalandia

So we are thinking of going this August.
I’d initially been looking at Lalandia however for the amount of time DH wants to go I think it might be too expensive to stay there.

We definitely want to self cater because of the costs, has anyone good any recommendations?

We want to do legoland and the zoo, any other reccs would be gratefully received!

If you don't mind glamping, I'd recommend Omme A Camping.

Slipperboots · 06/01/2019 16:13

I’ve looked at a few cabins, DH won’t cope if they are too basic! We also want a decent kitchen if we are cooking so much.

Sounds like the problem is your DH expectations, as long as a place is clean, I don't see a problem.

How long does he want to go for? Self catering would also be expensive - it just seems like everything is expensive there. If you don't want the holiday to be expensive might it be better to go for a short break just long enough to do the things you want and spend the rest of whatever holiday time you have having days out from home. Last two weeks in August might be less expensive for flights/accommodation because school holidays in many countries will have ended then.

A week. He will not share bathrooms or showers though which a lot of camping sites have.

OP posts:
BarbaraofSevillle · 06/01/2019 18:51

If he won't share bathrooms or showers, he needs to be aware that to go in Lalandia, he will be required to have a full naked shower in a communal shower area.

BarbaraofSevillle · 06/01/2019 18:52

That's Lalandia the waterpark, not the camping facilities. I've only been in the waterpark, I've not stayed in the adjacent accomodation.

AveEldon · 06/01/2019 18:54

We have been a couple of times - but only stayed 3 nights

The Lalandia photos are an accurate picture of what you get - we have only stayed in the Design Plus 6

Why not also go to somewhere else in Denmark like Aarhus?

GrouchingTiggerHiddenSomething · 06/01/2019 19:07

We went in October half term which worked out really well as the Danish half term dates were different, we just went Sun to Fri and got a 5 nights for the price of 3 deal. Have you looked at the end of August? Or the beginning of September if possible? I think the Danish schools go back before the end of the month. We really enjoyed Legoland with no queues, it is quite similar to the one in Windsor, the staff were great and all spoke perfect English. The Lalandia accommodation was good, i think legoland also has some self catering accommodation nearby. We also went to the Lego house which was fun, it's in the centre of Billund so a short walk away from Lalandia/Legoland, we bought combination tickets online in advance. Denmark is expensive, we took some food with us even though we were flying!

Shahlalala · 06/01/2019 19:09

Barbara they force you to shower naked communally? Really?

BarbaraofSevillle · 06/01/2019 19:25

Yes, it is fairly standard in many swimming pools in other countries, eg Iceland, Germany.

Those which attract lots of tourists like Lalandia and the Blue Lagoon in Iceland have very detailed posters instructing filthy Brits those who may be unaware of the practice.

Slipperboots · 06/01/2019 19:33

I have found a self catering place a short distance away that looks ideal and Aarhus looks really good.

If there is naked showering I’m not getting involved (a pubescent DD definitely won’t!)

OP posts:
Shahlalala · 06/01/2019 19:39

But why naked and communally. I have booked to go and at 7 months pregnant I don’t really want to be attempting to get in and out of a swimming costume to hose down....

BarbaraofSevillle · 06/01/2019 19:42

Because people in some other countries don't generally have the same hang ups about nudity that many British people do. It doesn't occur to them that there's anything uncomfortable about it.

You go into the changing rooms, take your clothes off, have a shower and put your costume on to go in the pool.

rootsandbranches · 06/01/2019 19:53

We've been to both, loved Lalandia. But absolutely to the naked showering. It's just a different perspective they want to keep bleach / chemicals to a minimum and think showing in a swimming costume is really dirty. I lived in a Scandinavian country and have had a member of staff in front of me ordering me to take my swimming costume off! You get used to it and it's actually really healthy for teens. I was teaching and had parents and kids greeting me while naked in the shower.Blush

There are private cubicles at the showers in lalandia, but they arent well signed at all. But you have to shower before you swim.

Some friends stayed recently at a bnb near Hejnsvig which was lovely apparently.

Fitting landsby holiday village has ok kitchens in the cabins. We managed a christmas dinner for 30 girl guides in one of them.

There's a hostel somewhere nearby too, but dont know what its like.

buckingfrolicks · 06/01/2019 19:59

Sorry I thought I'd arrived at a "name my baby" thread!

Slipperboots · 06/01/2019 20:04

Prob Legolas rather than Legoland though?....

I’ve been to Billund a number of times and have stayed in Lalandia each time.

Staying in Lalandia may make financial sense if you factor in the deals with legoland and LEGO house tickets, and due to the fact that the water park is included. Be warned that some of the accommodation is better than others - how many are in your party ? The three bed design 6 chalets are very nice but some of the smaller chalets are very poky.

Don’t get too hung up on the showering situation. They will make you shower before you enter the pool - we just showered in our swimming costumes, no one said anything. There are cubicles but as someone else said, you need to look for them. There is a family changing area upstairs which is less ‘in your face’ as well.

In terms of attractions - LEGO House is superb and we probably enjoyed it more than the park this year. It’s only open around a year and well worth a visit. Allow most of a day and book the day you want to visit ahead - there are limits on the number of people they will allow.

Slipperboots · 06/01/2019 21:01

I priced up a bundle with Lego tickets/Lalandia and it was cheaper separately. I think because Lalandia has a deal on at the moment.
The house I have found (which is nice) is £700 cheaper so there’s not much justification for Lalandia sadly though.

It’s the Lego we are going for (well DH and DC) so am interested in other places to go. We will do the zoo obviously and the beach if it’s nice.

Oh the west coast beaches are beautiful.

We went to Billund and LEGOLAND and Lalandia at the end of August last year. Kids aged 4 and 7. I wouldn't bother staying at lalandia. Our accommodation was lovely but a 20 minute walk from the pool, so needed to pay to park there. The little train was very infrequent. We only used the pool and soft play once as days at legohouse and LEGOLAND were so full.
Billund and Lalandia was ludicrously expensive.

We also stayed 2 nights at LEGOLAND holiday village in a wooden shed. There are communal toilets and cooking facilities. We did get a breakfast included there. Not a particularly nice one. We could also have bought a family takeaway box there containing chicken nuggets, chips, salad and pop for 4 people for £60.
However, for 3 nights we left Lalandia and stayed in Ribe about an hour away in a lovely B&B from booking.com. Ribe was a lovely town where we could even afford to eat out. A pizza place was about the price of pizza express here (if you were to ever go without a voucher.) If I went again I would stay in a town outside Billund and drive in for LEGOLAND and Legohouse.

It was amazing to be able to stay on the big roller coasters in LEGOLAND and just go round and round (one of our days was a drizzly Monday).

Fab museum in Jelling even if you aren't into history (it is free). And Tirpitz the German bunker was worth the trip.
Legohouse was the best day. LEGOLAND is ok but it is just a theme park. The models looked a bit rubbish and grubby after seeing the ones in the legohouse.
I literally took a suitcase of food. Cereal, pasta, sauce... some people would be horrified at the idea, but really kept the costs down (on the last night I think we bought pot noodle equivalents for 3 quid each at legoland village shop.)

Slipperboots · 07/01/2019 21:42

That’s really helpful thank you. Yeah, I’d take loads of food too, room for Lego on way home.
Will def look into Ribe too!

Don't bother saving too much space for lego. Except for a few little legohouse souvenirs, you could buy all the lego sets far cheaper at home. The best thing was in legohouse there were loads of accesories you could make minifigures with for a reasonable price. The best prices on lego sets were at billund airport on way home where they had some special offers on!

We went to the mini chef restaurant and ordered one child meal between the 4 of us. It was about 12 quid. It was fun, but it wouldn't have been any more fun ordering one each. The food wasn't very nice. It was about the experience.

Slipperboots · 07/01/2019 22:09

Is that the Lego system ordering place?

I’m not telling DH Lego isn’t good value, he won’t go. He is also looking for rare Lego Hmm.

OP posts:
Sharonkh76 · 07/01/2019 22:16

Yep. You can get to the restaurant, and the shop without Legohouse admission so can go on a different day to the day you do legohouse.
At Billund airport they had an exclusive lego model of billund airport for about 60 quid. He will like that.
