Holiday with one year old

DD just turned one and we really want to go somewhere warm for a holiday between April and June. Any suggestions for a place in the Europe?

DD hasn't been to a beach or sea so it would be nice to be near one.

Canaries are warm at that time of year and full of families with babies and pre-schoolers.

Just remember, it is all the same care required, just in a different location.
I have spoken to parents of young children who looked forward to their holidays and then were disappointed when they got home because they thought they would be having a break. They then realised the care required meant it was not a break, just a different location.
I live in Australia so I would say Fiji. Lovely spot and the locals love children. Easy to find a babysitter.

Thanks for the recommendations! Haven't been to canaries so this might be the time to explore.
Yes, we are aware that it might not be a break for mummy and daddy. Travelled long haul last year to visit family and, boy, what a challenge that was! But also we could see DD enjoying seeing new thins and meeting new people.
Fiji sounds great, wishing it's close to the UK!

We've taken DS to the Balearics in May twice, at 11 months and 23 months.

Lovely weather, beaches, cafe/restaurants, child friendly.

Redskyandrainbows67 · 05/01/2019 07:40

Agree - canaries

LauralovesLuke · 05/01/2019 07:42

Hi, we got married in Porec in Croatia - my sister-in-law came with her 1 yo and 3 yo - they had a brilliant time.

FlipperSkipper · 05/01/2019 07:43

Croatia. We went when my DS was 15 months old and it was fab. We went to Istria so short flight time (2.5 hours) and a lot of Italian influences in the food. People were lovely, and it was warm but not hot (we went in May).

FlipperSkipper · 05/01/2019 07:43

Laura we posted at the same time! We stayed in Porec, it's beautiful.

Don't pay too much attention to the doom and gloom that you see on mn. Yes, a holiday with a baby/toddler isn't the same as your previous holidays but we've been away with dd each year since she was born and we've had a great time - we just don't go expecting to do hours of sightseeing, hours of beach time and long lazy lunches/dinners like we use to. We tend to just Potter around between beach and pool, mooch around the area and one or two sightseeing things.

As a tip, try to find apartments/hotels with one bedroom so your dc can sleep in a different room and you can still do something in the evening (we downloaded a load of box sets and films and brought the laptop). We prefer going all inclusive as a buffet is very easy with small children and food is available pretty much all day but that can be easily replicated with a trip to lidl. All inclusive hotels also usually have a playground, pools and kids entertainment which kept our dd amused.

The Med sea will be cold in May but fine for a splash around.

LauralovesLuke · 08/01/2019 18:17

YES @flipper!!! What a coincidence!!! Where did you stay? We treated everyone and stayed on the island (Isabella hotel)

OneKeyAtATime · 09/01/2019 20:28

Majorca. Nice beaches, sea and short flight!

EmmaJR1 · 09/01/2019 20:35

We went to Tunisia with our son when he was 11 mths. 2.5 hour flight and the Tunisians love kids. Everyone was really helpful and we went in April so it was 19-24 degrees whilst there. Definitely get a suite/apartment with an extra room. That was the only downside of our holiday.

NuttyBetty · 10/01/2019 14:17

Thanks, everyone! Now I have a few places to look into.
We weren't really package holiday people before baby but is it much better to stay in a child friendly resort such as those offered by tui and Thomas cook?

Book somewhere that has a kids club or childcare you can use so you can have an hour or so without your DD.

FlipperSkipper · 11/01/2019 17:55

@LauralovesLuke that's where we stayed too! Love it, and they were so good with DS.

Charley50 · 11/01/2019 18:00

Cala dor in Mallorca is great for babies as the beaches are lovely coves and the sea nice and shallow.
However it gets very crowded, as the beaches are small. But as you're going off season it might be fine. I heard Menorca is even better for babies.

I don't think most people have the same holidays post-babies as pre-babies!

popflos · 18/01/2019 09:36

are you still looking? mumsnet top choice for years is Caserio del Mirador, easy flight to alicante spain.

Rhodes or Crete you may find your child is whisked away to see everyone in the restaurant while you eat in peace
