I've run out of ideas

I'm struggling to come up with ideas that will suit both me and OH. We used to love the same sorts of things - hiking, camping, cycling a bit of sightseeing. I still do, but OH has slowed down and iprefers to mooch around from one meal to the next and read. Preferably somewhere peaceful with nice scenery. Definitely with good food.
Last year we took my horse to Wales and I rode while he mooched and we went out for nice meals in the evening which worked well but we want somewhere warm this year.
Any ideas. It's just the 2 of us, kids are adults. No AI, he'd never stop.eating!

Crete... Fly into channia....
Lots to see great beaches, warm and amazing sea food at the harbour restaurants....

EveryDayIsLikeMonday · 04/01/2019 16:36

How about the Chania area of Crete or the Peloponnese? Plenty to see, do and eat! Best to go low/mid season if you can avoid school holidays.

countrygirl99 · 04/01/2019 16:42

We went to Crete a couple of years ago. OH would happily go back but im afraid I got a bit bored. I'm not really a beach person. I can manage the odd half day here and there but unless there is good snorkelling to, fossil hunting or rock pools etc I get fidgety.
I would love a walking holiday in somewhere like the Alpujarras or Madiera but that is a no no for OH.

Saalbach or Hinterglemm in Austria, lovely in summer and loads to do

saj90 · 04/01/2019 16:46

What about Holland? You can hire a canal boat and drift through the beautiful countryside. Most of the boats come with bikes too.

countrygirl99 · 04/01/2019 16:55

I'd love Austria, we've been several times when we were younger and OH was more active but he isn't keen now. Holland is worth looking at. We have an invite to visit friends in Rotterdam, we were thinking of a weekend trip buy could combine it with some exploring. OH can just about cope with cycling on the flat these days but hills are out.

Actually Madeira would suit both of you - there are some fab hotels in Funchal that he could relax in whilst you go out and there are some excellent restaurants too including a Michelin starred one at the Cliff Bay Hotel

Tattybear16 · 04/01/2019 17:20

Cruise, you can leave him with a book, and join in with any of the activities on board. Meet up again for lunch, dinner?

countrygirl99 · 04/01/2019 18:39

I really fancy Madeira so shall have another look.
Sorry, but a cruise would be both our ideas of hell.

Would you consider a city break? Could combine sightseeing with mooching in coffee shops/museums etc and do as much or as little as you like.

countrygirl99 · 04/01/2019 19:19

I did think about a couple of short city breaks rather than a longer holiday. We are both very much country lovers and get a bit "citied out" after a few days.

I was thinking walking, pony trekking and visiting historic sites rather than beaches in Greece. Obviously you could leave your dh on the beach!

SwedishEdith · 04/01/2019 20:44

Portugal - Atlantic coast up from Cabo day Roca. Or Majorca - the north side. Loads of walking and cycling opportunities in both.

FogCutter · 04/01/2019 20:48

Alps in spring and summer are gorgeous- Morzine, chamonix etc

We loved the Dolomites too.

MillicentSnitch · 04/01/2019 21:08

You could have a browse through the boutique hotels on i-escape.com and sawdays.com. A lot offer activities that you could take advantage of while your husband stays put. It might give you ideas for new places anyway.

minipie · 04/01/2019 21:19

How about Corsica or Sardinia or Sicily - but in May or September/October not summer.

Crete is a good suggestion I think - in spring it’s more of a walker’s island than a beach place. We have just booked a place in the middle of the countryside in Crete in April, there are waterfalls and orchid vales locally and also ruins further away.

Try i-escape for ideas

Iceland, beautiful scenery, hot swimming pools, books, horse riding, northern lights

MrsTerryPratcett · 05/01/2019 02:19

Europe only or further afield?

PenguinPandas · 05/01/2019 03:09

Norway - either Oslo to Bergen or along the west coast from Bergen by fjords.

PenguinPandas · 05/01/2019 03:19

I have not been but maybe Azores, lots of hiking, snorkelling, whale watching, scenery, dolphins etc

countrygirl99 · 05/01/2019 07:47

It does need to be Europe for 2 reasons 1) budget which sadly rules out Norway or Iceland 2) need to know we could get quickly due to frail elderly parents so needs to be somewhere with frequent flights.
We try and alternate reliable warm weather with riskier weather and last year was Wales. We were lucky last year but we've had a rough few months with elderly parents and need to look forward to some sun.
Somewhere in Greece with lots of sites would be good, shall investigate that. Am also looking at boat hire in Burgundy or Portugal after the Holland suggestion.
OH has some health issues and can only cope with very gentle walking and cycling these days. Some places I would be happy to walk on my own in others I would need to look for organised walks. I always like to ride but only once I've checked the horses are properly treated, sadly not always the case.
Its helping having a fresh set of brains on the problem. Thank you
