Has anyone been to Amman in Jordan?

Found very cheap flights for end of September/beginning of October, thinking of going for four days. I've heard it's amazing; the only advice I've had so far is not to stay anywhere less than four star but that was from a Jordanian Smile

Early days yet and I will be checking out the TripAdvisor forum but any recommendations for accommodation and sightseeing will be most welcome!

I'll be going with a female friend and have been reassured it's safe for women travellers.

Yes I have but I wouldn't spend long in Amman itself - Petra, Wadi Rum and the Dead Sea should be on your list.

swimster01 · 03/01/2019 17:51

If you do want to travel around, I can put you in contact with a highly rated local operator that we used this year

HelmutFrontbut · 03/01/2019 17:56

Thank you both. Where would be best to stay as a good base?

Yes but again I second not spending more than a day or two there. See the rest of the country. It's amazing.

HelmutFrontbut · 03/01/2019 17:59

On a budget so no 5 star hotels!

Go for it OP! But definitely travel around. I flew in and then out of Amman and managed to fit lots in.
Jordan is amazing. I went solo and felt very safe there. The Jordanian people are lovely.
Aqaba down on the coast worth a visit if you have time.
Enjoy it Smile

Sorry - can't point you in direction of good budget hotels - last there long time ago. Just wanted to reinforce other posters comments about Petra, Wadi Rum and Aquaba. Also to add a trip to Jerash - brilliant place - a roman city with an oval shaped forum.

HelmutFrontbut · 03/01/2019 18:07

Thanks Pink where did you stay?

Plan to spend 4/5 days there, is that enough?

Agree, travel around it’s a stunning country.

HelmutFrontbut · 03/01/2019 18:11

Thanks for all the advice. Did you all feel safe there?

PinkBuffalo · 03/01/2019 18:13

I wish I could help you on hotels, but I went a few years ago and can't remember just at the moment.
I went for a week, but you could always go for a few days and then go back longer another time if you like it

PinkBuffalo · 03/01/2019 18:14

Definitely felt safe there. A lots of places I stayed you had to go through scanners like at the airport, but you quickly get used to it, and it is for safety purposes.

LesLavandes · 03/01/2019 18:20

If you don't hire a car, how do you travel around?

HelmutFrontbut · 03/01/2019 18:23

Lovely thank you, I'll take it all on board.

I've been to an Arabic country before (ex husband) but I've forgotten what it's like.

It looked nice on TV, I saw Richard Ayowade and David Baddiel doing a show about it recently!

resipsa · 03/01/2019 18:47

I've been to Jordan 4 or 5 times. Never felt unsafe even if the hotels make you walk through a metal detector to gain entry. Very hospitable place. Love Aqaba.

resipsa · 03/01/2019 18:47

And Petra but felt that was too obvious to say!

travailtotravel · 03/01/2019 19:44

Oh yes, go for it. Jerash and down to Petra and if you can get into a Wadi, do it. Buses are good IIRC

swimster01 · 04/01/2019 08:19

I'd recommend Rum Stars Camp in Wadi Rum - it was an amazing experience and not expensive as I recall.

I wouldn't go too budget though - standards are not comparable to UK.

@swimster01 just found this thread and would appreciate your local operator information if you don't mind! TIA.
