Interesting family holiday for 4 adults

I'm looking for ideas! We have special birthdays next year and would like to go away. We need to go in mid June due to holiday restrictions, and will be taking out two adult offspring aged 21/25. None of us are lazing around on a beach types, although I do love to be near the coast...we all enjoy cities/sightseeing/adventure and have been to lots of European cities as well as New York already. I really enjoy cruises because of the variety of places you get to see in one holiday but the kids aren't that keen (we have done them before as a family) so I'm looking for inspiration. Where would be good in June weather wise and offer us some culture/sights/good food? I'm reluctant to go back to the states as we went last year as a couple and eating out was outrageously expensive.

I would suggest San Francisco (stay in Sausalito just north of the bridge, rent a houseboat), go moonlight sailing, walking in Muir Woods, foodie tour of Chinatown etc. Or Vancouver (so much going on in the summer, orca watching, cycling then a stay on salt spring island for wild swimming in lakes, amazing art studios, crafts and home produce). Did Vancouver last year and SF the year before. I live in the USA and visit the UK every year, where I find eating out expensive .... where were you in the USA previously?

OK I see you were in NYC - that explains the outrageous food prices...

Iceland

xyzandabc · 02/01/2019 16:25

Sorry just seen the comments about eating out in NY being expensive. Scrap Iceland then, you won't get much change from £200 for an evening meal for 4, 2 courses and a beer each. We didn't have a bad meal the whole time we were there though, delicious, just very very pricy.

Not sure the weather will be brilliant- is similar to Uk - but we did a fantastic trip to Canada. Flew to Vancouver - stayed on Vancouver Island then on to whistler and the Rocky mountains. Amazing scenery and loads of outdoor activities.

It wasn't last year we were in NY, that was a few years ago. Last year we were in Chicago and found it difficult to find mid range restaurants. They were either cheap burger/pizza joints or very expensive, hard to find anything in between! Quite tempted by Canada though, is it generally cheaper than USA? Iceland we might consider for a short break but we were thinking more of a 10-14 day holiday, maybe travelling between a few places by train or boat.

what about copenhagen + stockholm - lots of good food & interesting design & museums etc.

Or Helsinkin + Tallin (Estonia) is a good pair of cities

BradleyPooper · 02/01/2019 16:35

Oh yes, forgot about Whistler - you can drive there from Vancouver (stop at waterfalls on the way) and then take a seaplane over the peaks which is stunning. Unfortunately the UK pound is pretty weak at the moment so most places will be more expensive than usual (Europe, US, Canada, Iceland etc) and I expect through the first part of this year as well.....

swimster01 · 03/01/2019 17:55

I would go to Asia - Malaysian Borneo. USA and Canada are comparatively expensive and good food is hard to come by.

Look at Exodus Holidays.

BumblebeeBum · 03/01/2019 18:12

Asia! Japan specifically

Ta1kinPeace · 03/01/2019 18:12

Sri Lanka
Do a two week tour with a guide who travels with you the whole time
you move hotels every day but its not a big stress
FANTASTIC country

mycatplotsdeath · 03/01/2019 18:14

I would island hop around Greece

Yearinyearout · 03/01/2019 18:38

Ta1kinPeace Sri Lanka sounds appealing, any idea what the weather is like in June though? I had kind of assumed it would be rainy season in our summer but will check.
mycatplotsdeath we did Greek island hopping two years ago, loved it!
Swimster01 Love the idea of Asia but both DC have toured over there in the last year. Something to save for me and DH at a later date!

Rail holiday down the leg of Italy. Finishing with a few days on Sicily and possibly the ferry over to Malta?!

Yearinyearout · 03/01/2019 18:54

Another great idea mycat but we’ve done lots of Italy plus Sicily and Malta too. I’m checking out Sri Lanka as we speak and DH has just suggested India too!
