Affordable Holiday Abroad in School Holidays!

My son has now started reception, so we are stuck to school holiday dates Sad

Can anyone suggest affordable locations for a week/10 day holiday in August? I would have considered taking the Eurotunnel/Ferry to Northern France, but rather put off with potential post Brexit disaster!

Poland. Cheap flights and Gdańsk, Sopot, Gdynia is The perfect family destination. Beautiful cities, huge beaches, plenty to do.

Lots of people speak English but basic holiday Polish is not too hard and Car rental is also cheap and it's an easy country to drive in.

I'd even just consider driving it with an overnight stop in Germany

I've never considered Poland so will take a look x

France end of August or middle of Europe from 3rd week onwards, when schools return .

France, Normandy, really interesting area, reasonably priced chalet/lodge type parks on the beach with heated pools and so much to see and do, if you love history. We always stay there at the end of summer on our way back from Vendée.

France- Brittany or vendee area- we have been there camping in August for past 3 years. Euro amp or canvas or sites own accommodation...
Most expensive came to about £2000 for 10 nights mid August with eurocamp (family of 4) and crossings included either side, cheapest was last year when we took our own tent to Vendee for 2 weeks. (About £1200) It was fab.
We have already booked for this summer.

Thanks for the further comments. I'm toying with France more and taking the car over, I just want to see how this Brexit vote pans out in January first. Maybe Eurotunnel rather than ferry though, I really dislike the overnight ferry.

Otherwise, I've found a combination of flights to Pisa and plenty of affordable with shared pools, it just adds up when you start adding in car hire etc. (Thought I'd mention it for other people reading the thread, Italy self catering can be done).

We're already going to Denmark for a week at Whit, so I need to keep the costs down really!

Why only overnight ferry? Dover to Calais only takes about 90 minutes!

Ivegotthree · 03/01/2019 20:13

Dover Calais ferry cost us £180 return in peak season last August!

Cheapest holiday I've ever had.

Notquiterichenough · 03/01/2019 20:15

We take the Tunnel and eurocamp/canvas is France. We've booked already for this year, regardless of Brexit.

Canvas is working out more reasonable than eurocamp at the moment.

ritzbiscuits · 03/01/2019 21:48

@recently Oh yes, Dover Calais ferry is an option. Was thinking in my head about the ferries that drop you onto the Brittany coast.

I had a very choppy journey in the past so would ideally prefer Eurotunnel I think.

We've never been able to afford packages in or out of school holidays.

Book everything yourself and travel and find your own acxmd

Flights to Nice (can usually be got comparitively cheap!), Air BnB in the Old Town and self cater. Forget car hire and take the train up and down the Riviera
