Egypt?

We're looking for AI holidays this summer, with a 10yr old and an almost 14yr old. Both teachers, so it has to be summer hols.
This will be our 2nd holiday abroad, we went to Turkey 18months app with a windfall, that holiday would now be out of our budget.
I've been looking at the cheapest, and happened upon Egypt. My mum has said it wouldn't be a good idea, but I don't know if that's because she's a (ahem) DM reader?!
Has anyone been to Egypt recently?
Thanks in advance.

I’ve got a friend who’s out there at the mo and having a whale of a time by the look of it!

She’s a lone parent with 2 DDs and the very opposite of a DM reader - collects clothes for refugees, cooks for the homeless etc so not susceptible to the type of scaremongering that might put others off.

She’s also taken her DDs to Turkey when others were avoiding it and had a lovely holiday! Like anywhere, it probably depends a bit on the area, but if you’re going AI there’s even less risk of stumbling across trouble.

Inbox me if you want details of where she’s staying.

Thank you @RagingWhoreBag, that really helps! I think I'm much more like your friend than my Mum 😂!
Unfortunately, the deal I thought was too good to be true was indeed too good to be true, I had the dates muddled up!
I might tap you up later for the hotel, just off to do the good shop.

I went to Luxor so not all inclusive, and it was horrible. I'm well travelled but the hassle was unbearable, everything (except the hotel) was dirty and I wouldn't wish the place on my worst enemy. But I know people that go to Sharm etc all inclusive and love it. If you want to go and never leave your hotel, and you're happy to ignore the poverty, child trafficking etc that goes on outside your AI bubble, then it's fine.

(Definitely not a DM reader!)

How hot does it get during the Summer in Egypt? I’m pretty sure I couldn’t bear it and I lived in Singapore for years.

cloudtree · 31/12/2018 11:02

Egypt in the summer is very very hot. Plus you need to check the foreign office website if you're not going to a red sea resort since lots of areas are still a no go and your insurance is therefore unlikely to be valid.

Nesssie · 31/12/2018 11:03

Egypt is my all time favourite holiday destination. The hotels are beautiful, the sea is gorgeous, the people are so friendly. I would recommend a package tour to a well known area such as sharm el sheik and any excursions book through your hotel or tour operator.

It is extremely hot in the height of Summer.

They suffered extremely when airlines stopped flying there, so I welcome any help to get their tourist industry back up and running. Each hotel employs thousands of staff, mostly local, giving them a source of income.

Birdie6 · 31/12/2018 11:14

Egypt is a magical place - but even the expat locals leave in the summer if they can. The heat is pretty damned bad in the "winter", but summer is a killer.

BarbaraofSevillle · 02/01/2019 05:11

If you want an AI hotel holiday somewhere like Hurgarda, then the risk is so low that it's not worth worrying about.

Yes there has been a few incidents directly affecting tourists/hotels over the years, but there also has been in France, Spain, Germany etc. 99%+ of people who have an AI holiday in Hurgarda do so safely.

However, I do think it will be too hot in the summer, so can you go at easter or October instead as weather will probably be hot but not too hot.

Otherwise, if you go B&B in an apart hotel somewhere like Greece or Canaries, you can probably do it for a lot less than AI with a combination of eating out at least once a day and easy meals/stock of drinks and snacks from the supermarket.

Loveweekends10 · 02/01/2019 05:38

I wouldn’t go to Egypt mid summer- not because of scare stories just because its too bloody hot. The best time to go is May or Oct. We are in Marrakesh at the moment on an AI. The hotel is amazing but once again the heat in August would be too much.

Hersetta427 · 02/01/2019 16:35

I have been to Egypt 7 times but I wouldn't do in our summer - 2 years ago we went late May and it was 46 degrees. If you are thinking of hurghada then both times we have been I have had awful, awful Egyptian tummy to the point we would not not go back (have been 3 times to sharm with no issues and twice to marsa Alam.

personally you don't need to go so far to get decent weather in the med in the summer. if you are looking at more budget options, how about Tunisia?

noenergy · 03/01/2019 12:16

We went to Egypt during October half term to Hurghada and the weather was still hot, early 30s, would not recommend it in the summer.

But it was a great holiday and felt very safe, no one is allowed in the hotel gates, not even taxi drivers. Without you preordering and giving contact details to security.

It was very cheap. Lots for the kids to do.
Book flights spectate and look at love holidays or sunshine.co.uk for hotels. My hotel was only £70 per night all inc.

noenergy · 03/01/2019 12:18

If you are looking to go in a holiday during the summer then I would look at Turkey as the temperature is a lot lower than Egypt.

I went to Turkey 2 years ago. Again booked separate flights and hotel. But you can find some great packages for Turkey last minute or on Thomas Cook

HappyKatieA · 04/01/2019 16:56

Thank you all for responding, I think we may go back to Turkey, as that was definitely hot enough in 2017!

Egypt in summer will be freaking hot, you can sunburn even hiding under a beach umbrella. Fancy spending time in a hotel? I guess, not. Hotel rooms look nice on photographs, but the reality is old and most often dirty. The staff is only male, many of them are young and they will pester all the available white female no matter if women are with their men (BF, DH). Locals outside hotels are a special pain the the a*s.
The only unbeatable point is the sea. Incredibly awesome. But it's worth going there in April or October.
Mb consider Croatia? Or it's out your budget?

BlueUggs · 15/01/2019 07:36

I've never fancied it but I know others who love it.
Just make sure you absolutely don't drink ANY tap water, even to brush your teeth.

maskingtherealme · 15/01/2019 22:23

We are going to Egypt this forthcoming February half term with a 7 and 4 year old.
We booked through Loveholidays which is considerably cheaper than TUI and TC. It was at least £1500 less than the cheapest TC resort for a party of 5 in 2 separate rooms.
Chose February because temperatures are slightly higher than the Canaries at Easter usually between 23 and 27 degrees with days of up to 31 but never below 22.

Summer holidays will be incredibly busy and extremely hot; hotter than Turkey and we go to Turkey in the six weeks holiday. Temperatures will rarely fall blow 40 degrees. Also I am a member of a few FB groups and tripadvisor forums usually shows a massive increase in tummy bugs during the summer. I can only assume this is sue to high temps meaning food spoils more easily and quickly than it does in more moderate temperatures.

I would avoid Egypt in the height of summer and choose to venture their between October and April instead.

Turkey prices are on the increase due to many snubbing high costs of Spain etc and choosing to holiday there instead. It's been a favourite of ours since 2014.
