Thinking of doing a house swap there next summer with mates from NYC. Just wondered if it is nice?

I don't remember much about Hampton Beach per se, but did go to high school not far from there in a town called Exeter. It's a boarding school, which is why I don't know much about the surrounding area, but I recall Hampton Beach being pretty nice - depends what you're looking for. I could recommend a visit to Exeter, which is only ten minutes away by car - a pretty little New England town, and the school campus is like a mini-university campus (and open for strolling, unlike British universities!) The town itself is cute and has nice shops and restaurants, including (I hope it's still there!) a place called Loaf and Ladle which serves yummy homemade soup and bread. There are loads of other little towns around within an hour drive, including Portland, Maine, and Boston is only about an hour and a half ...

Thanks Tartegnin - we are just looking for somewhere where pretty laid back where we can hang out with our mates, we have similar aged daughters - and go to the beach, eat out in nice places and not be surrounded by horrendous crowds of people! The house swap place is great, has it's own pool and hot tub (cringe) and they have kids too so is all child proofed. It's only a couple of mins walk from the beach.

Sounds perfect! Definitely right for a laid back holiday and yet loads to do, as well. Have fun exploring, and especially the great lobster and clam shacks you'll find up and down the coast.
