Same place every year or somewhere different?

Would be interested to hear others' views on this.
I have happy childhood memories of returning several times running to the same seaside resort and enjoying the familiarity of the holiday surroundings. Dh is the same. This year we spent a week on the North Devon coast, our first happy family holiday for three years. I know dh and I both have stick-in-the-mud tendencies so I wondered if other families still do the "all back off to Llandudno/Eastbourne/Paignton/Whitby" routine or whether you all do something different and novel for your main family hols each year?
Ds is frantic to go back to Woolacombe, he says, but he also claims to have won an Olympic Gold at wrestling while we were asleep and also to own a solid gold motorbike, so we're not taking his views all that seriously.
Are we old fuddy-duddies or pragmatic parents? The lure of knowing how the shower works/where the GP is/which are the best beaches is very strong...

There was a thread about this recently here

Have to say that i prefer to go to different places. The only holiday destination we want to go back to is Eilat and that's for financial reasons (great hotels, very cheap)but that's autumn/winter only and increasingly hard to fit in.

my mum and dad either used to take us to

Padstow, Cornwall (before it was trendy)

Barmouth, Wales

Wembury (nr plymouth) Devon

we went to Bournemouth a few times and that was about it!

With us, well we cant really afford holidays atm but did tend to keep going back to Cricieth, Wales all the time!

I was very lucky as a child to have both - we went to new places every year, but also revisited 'old' places. I don't think there's anything wrong with re-visiting, if everyone in the family is happy with it. We're returning to Knoll House for the same week for the 4th year running this year! Only this morning ds was telling me with great delight all about what we would find there, and with obvious pride that he would know his way around. Only don't go back expecting the same thing, especially if it was a dream of a holiday atmosphere-wise. You can't recreate the wonderfullness, only hope that it will happen again. There was a place we visited last year at Knoll House that I don't want to revisit for many years, because I don't want the magic to be destroyed.

Well, we're off to the same place next year - got back last week!

Several reasons :

I wanted to go somewhere else - but it was me against DH, DD1, DS1 and DD2

This year we went with friends (8 in fact and 10 children!) and they've booked to go back. This swung it with my kids because they wanted to be together - I must admit I've never seen 13 children get on as well as those lot did.

Although I did want to go somewhere else, I did thoroughly enjoy this year and am already looking forward to next year

Another advantage (as it's a Eurocamp holiday) is that I've already chosen my Pitch Number. Just got to write and confirm it to the Reps in May (also with the Owner of Campside who I became very friendly with after DD1s hospital visit).

marina, to be perfectly honest i'd get bored going back to the same place (unless it was v cheap/free!) - and to be honest our girls will probably be happy anywhere that has somewhere warm to sleep, supply of food, pool/sea, games, other kids - actually other kids is pretty near the top of dd1's list, as she completely dominated the french campsite we were on for the last 10 days. she said the best bit of her holiday was picking blackberries..oh for the simple life

We have a vow , never to return to the same place twice, as we are always disappointed.

bundle · 31/08/2004 15:25

last year though..we did go to the house dh went to with his family as a child..it was lovely (steps in cliff down to private beach) but facilities (ie kitchen) hadn't been updated..no dishwasher or washing machine and room to swing only v small mammal. dh definitely enjoyed it more than me!

Our USP is that the place is owned by dh's cousins. We don't get a discount but they are friendly, welcoming folk and it is nice to have family around without staying with them. It is also pretty much situated on the beach with glorious sea views.
Can really see the pros and cons on this, thanks all.
