calling all intrepid travellers

what's the most adventurous holiday with kids you've done? We've always been of the have-kids-will-travel school of thought. But our next plan (or rather idea, too early to call it a plan) is going to need a lot of background work if we see it through. Eithiopia. My sil is working there so we won't be going it entirely alone, but it will be a quantum step for us. Although we've been to lots of places with kids - and have no probs with the long flight aspect - they've either been pretty westernised (US, Capetown, Oz, Europe) or places with which we are familiar and where we have family (Zimbabwe). In our pre-children days we did a fair amount of reasonably adventurous stuff and I've been to some fairly far-flung and some utterly non-touristy places through work. So anyone been truly intrepid? What's your advice? dds are 4 and 2.

Like you Hatter I have also travelled to some fairly far flung places BC. We have also done a lot of travelling since DS came along - he passed the 100,000 mile mark in April when he was 2yrs11 months so no stranger to the inside of an aeroplane. We haven't really gone anywhere adventurous though - California, India (Goa), South Africa x 4 and various shorter trips to Europe.

I think it's entirely feasible to travel to Ethiopia, if it were me I'd be thinking about:

  1. Vaccinations
  2. Nappies (if your younger DD is still in them)
  3. Allergies/potential medical probs (i.e. investigating what hospital facilities are available and if travel insurance covers them)
  4. Personal security (the home office website is probably a good start).

We would have liked to go to Tanzania and China during the course of this year but me falling pregnant and our impending move to South Africa have scuppered these plans . Kilimanjaro and the Great Wall will have to wait until DS2 is a little older/out of nappies.

Go for it - you'll have a great time!

Hi,

I knew about that book Lisalisa but wondered if it might be a bit general. Maybe I'll try it. I've ordered a Lonely planet on Eithiopia. Got a bit nervous seeing that only decent hospital is in Addis. Nappies aren't an issue (potty training more or less complete now!)Agree that vaccinations might be. Apparently crime is very low. I think we have to wait and see what my sil thinks when she's been out there for a while. I've done far "worse" than Eithiopia myself for work (Iraq last summer most notably) and have done emergency first aid and various bits of useful training but taking my children somewhere is a whole different story. I wish I didn't think it but I do: the old "what if...."
