Holiday prices increased for 2019

Hi, I have been looking to book our usual holiday for next summer. We are a family of 4 - 2 adults, and 2 teenagers who will be 15 and 16 next August when we want to go (I work in a school so can't go any other time/earlier).

I know we pay a lot for holidays - I am not trying to justify that at all. We like 4/5 star, AI somewhere hot for a week with good food and lots of pools. Last year we went to a lovely place in Kos, cost £4500 for the week. I looked yesterday to book to go back as we liked it so much - the very same holiday now just over £6000! I know we could just about to afford it, but really?! Looking around most holidays that were around the 4k for a week are now 5/5.5k.

Is this Brexit?! Have others experienced this?

Can I just say that I don't want loads of posts saying how they swim to France, stay in a tent and it only costs £2.50 for the week. That is not what we want, and we are willing to pay around 4k (just not 6...…). I am genuinely asking if others have seen the same price hikes.

TIA.

The exchange rate is crap at the moment, so yes prices will be higher.

SumitosIsMyWall · 26/11/2018 10:04

The exchange rate is crap and until the terms of our withdrawal from the EU are official most companies will be exercising caution.

For holiday companies this almost certainly means adding a hefty premium to anyone wanting to secure a holiday post Brexit just in case their financial obligation increases. The alternative is letting their reputation take a hammering when they have to cancel thousands of holidays because it would be financially unviable to provide holidays at a loss.

We want to take the children short haul abroad next year, I'm not even starting to look until the Brexit terms are official and everyone knows what the deal is with borders, visas, insurance etc

JurassicGirl · 26/11/2018 10:08

We're wait until around May time to book for Sept/Oct because of Brexit.

We tend to go for fairly cheap holidays & when I looked recently it was about £750 more for the same thing! Most annoying!

Maybe consider a last minute deal?

Silverstar2 · 26/11/2018 10:34

Hmmm Brexit it is then, as I thought.

Very annoying, as we always book around now, just to ensure the right place, especially as tied to school holidays.

Will hold off and check again in the spring. Thanks everyone.

I am SUCH a planner, not sure I could hold my nerve for a last minute deal!!!

I know what you mean about planning! It's the best bit!

You can still plan a bit though, if your criteria is hot weather & a bit of luxury you can plan your clothes & reading books etc then a bit of research into the area before you go - sorted! Grin

Great idea JurassicGirl thanks.

Have you tried looking outside the Euro zone. You might be able to get a week in the Caribbean for £1500 each.

Silverstar2 · 26/11/2018 12:17

But that makes 6K allmycats which is what I am trying to avoid paying! Happy with Europe at around 4/4.5K.

Have you considered a cruise? If you go out of Southampton obv no airfares to pay for . Lots for teenagers on board . Can really recommend Royal Caribbean. Ring round different cruise agents to get prices and then barter them down a bit .

Rayn · 26/11/2018 14:20

Prices have gone up! They are shocking. I wanted to book but have decided to wait. I have 2 adults and 4 children and I am struggling too. Even looked at doing it separately and flight prices are the highest I have seen them (in school holidays).
Irritating as I am a planner and you always think my booking early you are getting a good deal x

Gizlotsmum · 26/11/2018 14:21

Does one of the children turning 16 change if they are an adult price? Or is it younger?

1981m · 26/11/2018 17:00

We ve just booked two weeks in Majorca for the four of us for £3.5k including two villas and flights.

1981m · 26/11/2018 17:01

Sorry £4K with flight

ems137 · 26/11/2018 17:05

This is a massive reason we've been doing villa holidays for the past couple of times. The prices are becoming out of our league for AI somewhere hot. We like 2 weeks away and for the holiday village in Kos it was close to £8000!! Or we can pay £4000 for a villa and flights.

Grandadwasthatyou · 26/11/2018 17:36

@Silverstar2 ... I know this isn't the point of your thread but can I ask where in Kos you went?
I booked next year's holiday as soon as I got back from this year's in early September. Have booked Holiday Village Atlantica, Kos and it's costing £4258 ( including late check out as our flight is late at night). Goodness knows how much it will cost if people leave it any later to book, probably your 6k!

Last year at the same time we paid something like £3600 for one week at the end of August. Granted it was Tenerife, but still a 4 star all inclusive, 2 adults and 2 children.
So prices have definitely gone up substantially.

Silverstar2 · 27/11/2018 07:06

Hi Grandadwasthatyou we went to the Astir Odysseus which I loved and would like to go back to - it has the most amazing huge pool and private beach. But as I say, this August £4.3k, next August 6k, same holiday. Kids already classed as 'adult' so don't think it's that.

Thanks for the recommendation, I will have a look.

Just done Sweden and Norway for next year and that's coming in around £4.5k for 4 plus we will spend another £1.5k on trips. Not sure its gone up that much, did trip to Finland few years ago which came in at the same. Flights incredibly cheap with Ryanair. I did notice the gap between shorthaul and longhaul prices seems to be closing. On First Choice there were a few around £4.5k AI.

anniehm · 05/12/2018 17:48

Exchange rate is crap. With older kids just wait until nearer the time - you don't need family rooms etc. After March the impact of Brexit will clarify (hopefully to our advantage!). Also 16 counts as an adult in most countries.

anniehm · 05/12/2018 17:49

Should say, we are thinking of a cruise - 10 days £1200 each 5 star! Just waiting on dd2's exam timetable confirmation

winterisstillcoming · 05/12/2018 18:15

Go to Dubai.
