How the hell do you spend that on holidays - especially in the UK?!

nickytwotimes · 21/06/2007 19:31

nothing
nothing

Leslaki · 22/06/2007 08:15

My God you spend a lot!! We go camping in France in a 3 bed mobile during peak time and it's £1300 for 4 of us. Well, it's free actualy cos we use Tesco vouchers! We only take about £700 spending money and sometimes bring some home. Would be the same cost for 6 of you as kids are free

brimfull · 22/06/2007 08:19

we budget about £3000 for our summer holiday

portonovo · 22/06/2007 14:39

I really don't know how you can spend that much on UK holidays. I would have to try seriously hard to do that! You're not even including spending money!

We save £100 a month, making £1200 and that does for our accommodation and spending money. That's for one week self-catering for a family of 5 in the UK in August. We don't spend more than we budget for. Actually, until a couple of years ago we were saving £75 a month and still kept within budget.

Otherwise, we have a couple of cheap Travelodge or camping breaks a year.

We keep the cost down by deciding what we can afford in total. Booking a cottage and then the rest is our spending money - and then we stick to it. That's all we spend, including all food.

I think your definition of cheap differs from mine somewhat...

I must admit my initial instinct was the same as yours, Cat64!

knakered · 22/06/2007 23:33

'fraid it is real...houses cost us £1k/week..half term cost us more this year as we went to Hay on Wye Literary festival and spent extra £700 on tickets...and it peed down..Ireland will be 2 weeks and we have ferry cost...we always end up going with other people and just agree to accomodation choice, always quite spontaneous...have NEVER sat down at the beginning of the year and said our budget is £x ...so looking back now and adding it all up is quite shocking....just had the discussion with my husband that if we said our budget was x ..would we do one posh holiday abroad?..the answer was no...we like the British Isles - outdoors etc

We had 2 weeks in a 3-bed apartment in Spain in May/June - the apartment cost £1100, including use of all facilities like pools, gym, steam room etc, and flights were £120 per head, so for 6 of us that was under £2K. (Hire car should have been £265 on top but hasn't appeared on the credit card statement for some reason )

Last year we didn't go anywhere

WendyWeber · 22/06/2007 23:39

How old are your kids, knakered?

Flamesparrow · 22/06/2007 23:44

Same as nicky, nowt & sod all

Tortington · 22/06/2007 23:46

we have traditionally gone camping in france as a cheap family holiday. euro tent with venue holidays 10 days inc eurotunnel under £600 for 5 of us - so the total cost of holiday is £600.

we then budget for food and spending money.

colditz · 22/06/2007 23:49

about £400 total.

MrsSpoon · 23/06/2007 00:07

Up until recently we have generally only been on one holiday a year, usually at a cost of around £1,000 for the four of us and then spending money. However we have recently bought our own apartment as a bit of a business/investment, so it either costs us more than before or less than before depending on how you look at it. My MN ad is here and we are about to reduce the last week in July/first week in August as a last minute deal and are offering MNetters 15% off if you are interested in a cheaper break in future.
