Attractive European cities, not too hot, not too big

Thinking waaaay ahead to summer 2020 when DC will be 14 and 11. I think cities might be the way to go for us. Where's:

  1. Not much over 30 degrees max in August
  2. Small enough that you can stay in the centre and be close to several things to do (i.e. not Berlin, I gather) 3)Attractive / historic with interesting minor things for the adults to do in an hour or so while the kids refuse to leave the apartment
  3. And large enough that there are enough local interesting bits of culture / foodie stuff etc. to keep us interested for 10 days or so, and some more major things that we can drag the kids along to.
  4. Have good outdoor public pools
  5. Ideally, allow Segwaying by under 16s (Spain does, I know, other countries I'm not sure).

I'm not keen on Paris in August. I'm not sure somewhere like Heidelberg would have enough in the minor pleasures category, although Germany is good for outdoor pools. Scandinavia sounds great but is probably too expensive (especially post-Brexit, if we do...). Amsterdam would be great but maybe weather a bit too dodgy? And it's very mosquito-y in August, I know.

Any ideas?

Copenhagen but I see you say not too expensive and omg it was expensive. 18 euro for 3 cokes. I can't remember how many kroner.

My friends and I went to Belfast and had a blast. STayed in the culloden which was in a beautiful location, beautiful hotel too. they had a roaring fire in early november. The bus tour of belfast very interesting with the history. also titanic exhibition very interesting.

Krakow?

LIZS · 15/11/2018 20:28

Salzburg or Vienna, although you might get stircrazy after a couple of days but it is easy to move on to a mountain/lake resort for a week or so.

FraterculaArctica · 15/11/2018 20:28

Budapest? But could be a bit hot.

greencatbluecat · 15/11/2018 20:33

Stockholm. The Swedes are so friendly. There is a lot to do in Stockholm and the food is good.

greencatbluecat · 15/11/2018 20:34

Munich too.

GoodStuffAnnie · 15/11/2018 20:35

I was going to say Salzburg.

Hermagsjesty · 15/11/2018 20:36

Copenhagen
Stockholm
Nantes

LoniceraJaponica · 15/11/2018 20:37

Bruges

clarrylove · 15/11/2018 20:39

Tallinn? Think 10 days would be too long for most small cities though.

Arkengarthdale · 15/11/2018 20:47

Edinburgh. Ticks every box

JustAnotherManicUsername · 15/11/2018 21:00

Wow, loads of suggestions, thanks. I think we want Abroad cos it's more exciting. I think Bruges is too small - the balance between small enough to have things nearby and big enough to keep us occupied for 10 days may be the trickiest bit.

Prague? Ticks most of the boxes. Very cheap too.

expatmigrant · 15/11/2018 21:16

Berlin. Had a fab time there with DS this summer.

BestIsWest · 15/11/2018 21:20

Lisbon is perfect. It gets hot but lots of breezes cool t down a bit. Loads of history, galleries, castles etc to see. Nice places for short day trips (Sintra, Cascais). Great food, Markets, bars etc. 10 days perfect.

BestIsWest · 15/11/2018 21:22

And you can do a Lisbon by Segway tour.

AdaColeman · 15/11/2018 21:24

Krakow, lots to do, fab food/restaurants, botanic garden, salt mine, arts galore. Close enough for a day trip into the mountains (hire a driver). It could be lacking the swimming pool though, you'd have to check that.

Phuquocdreams · 15/11/2018 21:25

Barcelona?

chemenger · 15/11/2018 21:26

Stockholm. Lots to do including taking a ferry out to the islands. Great food. We stayed outside the city and got a bus in and out, public transport is fantastic.

Auldspinster · 15/11/2018 21:26

Second Lisbon, I'm no good in the heat but managed just fine in July.

AnyFucker · 15/11/2018 21:27

Krakow

jesuispissedoff · 15/11/2018 21:28

I strongly advise against Barcelona in August, full of tourists and unbearably humid, it is better in spring or autumn (although not today, we've been having insane storms). I would say Amsterdam, as really nothing is more than an hours travel, even if you went as far out as Efterling.

JustAnotherManicUsername · 15/11/2018 21:29

Lisbon sounds promising although possibly too hot. Maybe Prague and Krakow. I had a great few days in Warsaw one summer but that's definitely too spread out. Vienna too maybe. Thanks!

We swam in the Baltic outside Stockholm, you can kayak and probably swim in the city itself. It was boiling when we were there, lots of Southern Europeans were complaining about the heat because they had gone north to escape it.

Grenada combined with Nerja
