How do people justify the cost of holidays?

I haven't been on holiday abroad in years, UK or otherwise. I thought maybe we could go somewhere next September, and I am shocked at the prices.

For a week, 2 adults, in September (ie. during school holidays), we would have to spend around £600 each to go somewhere decent in Europe (we wouldn't want to go somewhere like Turkey or Morocco, personal preference). That's £1200 before paying for things such as hold luggage, transfers, and food out there.

I then looked at hotels in Cornwall. It cost even more - around £1300 minimum to rent a room in a hotel for a week, with just breakfast included.

How can people afford and justify doing this every year? It seems a crazy amount of money. I know you only live once, but the cost of living is so expensive these days I don't know how people can spend this without feeling guilty!

I justify the cost because I love holidays and am happy to spend a fortune on them. We only get 5 weeks hols a year so want to make the most.

Also we do a mix. Long haul 5 star luxury one month, youth hostel the next.

It really helps to rent somewhere with a kitchen, go to the cheapest supermarket and cook all your own food. Going to the beach is just as nice with a homemade sandwich. We also rent apartments that aren't too close to the beach. We're ok with a little walk and it saves massively in the price. We like Portugal.

I don’t have to ‘justify’ the cost of my holidays.... I have a good salary so I can spend my money how I like. I love travelling and usually have a few trips a year from city breaks in Europe, to a month or so travelling further afield. The cost varies massively - four nights in Tallinn last year cost around £300 each including flights, four weeks last year in Japan probably cost something like £7k each including flights. If I couldn’t afford it, I’d just do the weekends away or focus on countries with lower costs (like parts of Eastern Europe) or a travel style which was cheaper (like self-catering).

1200 is a lot for a hotel in Cornwall to be fair, we only stay in 5* self catering on beaches and usually get it for £800 ish outside of school hols.

We're lucky and I know and appreciate that, we spend a lot on holidays, c£5k each a year, but we work hard and save hard as this is how we like to live. We're not bothered about fancy clothes/takeaways/night out etc, happily wear primark and save money for hols.

I'm a single parent and have 2 teenagers. For 3 of us (adults) I paid £1100 for3 weeks in Greece in a 2 bedroom apartment near the beach with local flights. Sometimes we fly or drive within the uk to get cheap flights. Last holiday we flew toBristol for £200 return to get cheap flights if £33 pp to Turkey. Flights from Edinburgh were £1500! Have driven to Manchester and Newcastle to save money (e.g from Manchester £300 return for 3, from Scotland £1000). Find the cheap flights then choose accommodation and join FB forums for where you want to go and ask for cheap and good recommendations to suit your needs, then contact owners by googling for contact info. You'll save loads especially if you can travel out with school holidays.
