NYC or Cape Town?

I have 1-2 weeks in March to take as holiday, instead of going away during the summer.

I've found flights to Cape Town for £400 (Thomas Cook)
and flights to New York for £250 (BA)

I've been to New York before, about 5 years ago. My partner has been to both, and South Africa recently.

We both like wine, so would envisage some days in Cape Town then out into the country for wine tasting stuff.

In New York, we would like to just see all the museums. There is a chance that in about 5 years we'd find ourselves in NYC with work anyway.

Where is cheaper, I know the flights are more to SA, but the time difference is small, and it may equal out as it's cheaper there?

It’s waaay cheaper in SA. I would arrange to stay in the Winelands. You don’t want to wine taste and drive! March is still warm in SA and they have outstanding guest houses offering chic accommodation. You will still be high season but the cost of eating out and travel is very reasonable. Tips and tax don’t kill you either as they do in NY. You could consider going along the Garden Route to Port Elizabeth. We also like exploring areas like the Great Karoo: there are so many options.

Having been to NY in March, the wind can bite your ears off! I agree that the museums are wonderful but I think I would choose SA in March if you heave never been.

Greenwood guide or the Portfolio Collection have great South African guest houses listed in their guides. We have never been disappointed! Don’t stay at the Waterfront in Cape Town. You could be anywhere. Do visit The Silo. It’s a must for a drink!

Thanks very much, I’m busy checking out the hotels on those sites! Some are so cheap in comparison to the UK, £150 a night at one of those vs in NYC is a bit hard to compare!

Your money goes a lot further in SA. Tipping is not circa 15% and sales tax isn’t so obvious! You will find somewhere lovely to stay and you will be well looked after!

Have been to both several times and love both but with 1-2 weeks at that time of year it's Cape Town, the Winelands and garden Route all the way. We rented a couple of fabulous villas on arb&b the last time. And your money will go so much further.
Wonderful food and wine. Book a table at the Test Kitchen or it's sister restaurant.
You are now making me think of booking some flights Wink

South Africa all the way! No jet lag so you can hit the ground running, fabulous restaurants, wine, scenery and beaches.

Just booked SA in April. My husband grew up in Cape Town so he is taking me to the motherland. Been talking to his mates out there..The rand goes a long way!
