What can we do in the south of England?

Husband and I have 10 days off at Christmas as our work shuts down.

We thought we'd do a little tour of the south of England. We live in Yorkshire so have done to death the Lake District, Peaks, North York Moors, Scotland, Northumberland etc and thought we'd try heading south instead.

I know nothing about what lies south of Sheffield! Grin

We both like the outdoors, don't mind the odd museum either. I would quite like to go to Dartmoor, Stonehenge and Bath but haven't really got any ideas. We just plan to set off in the car and see what happens so any suggestions welcome!

I'd visit the Cotswolds.

If you go to Bath visit the cathedral at Wells.

In this order: Eden Project, Dartmoor, Durdle Door, Jurassic Coast, Poole Harbour and Brownsea island, New Forest, Portsmouth, Isle of Wight

The White Horse at Uffington - national trust car park and then a walk along the Ridgway including Wayland's Smithy.

Agreed re Durdle Door and the coastal path near there - it's quite a walk to do.

Blenheim Palace is expensive but it really is pretty fabulous and i like Woodstock the town to stay for a night - or 2/3 nights perhaps using it as a base to see Oxford? It's about 10 mins drive from wodstock to the Peartree park and ride for oxford, or the buses are pretty good too (i would bus it).

Agreed re Stonehenge. I absolutely love the way they have done it now though my mum mourns the days when you could climb on the stones...

Just be careful about distances and traffic.

Definitely the New Forest- absolutely magical, especially at that time of the year. Forest of Dean is pretty good too.

Agree about the New Forest and Stonehenge (also Salisbury - they need the tourism and it's picture-postcard pretty). And Bath for definite - the spa there is amazing - roof-top pool with views all around, which would be lovely in the winter. And lots of Jane Austen stuff if that's your bag.
