Where to go for a month...in August?

DH and I will both take August off this year. DCs are aged 7 & 4 and we would like to take them away for that month (or at least 3 weeks of it).

The last few years we have been to France which is lovely but I think I would like something different this time.

Budget is OK (10k inc travel) but obviously can't be in luxurious places given it's summer holiday time.

Anyone have any ideas? We have been to Oz and Greece quite a bit (love Greece) but don't want to go to Oz again just as it was recent...and a really long way! Pre children we have also been to India, Asia, US but not taken the DCs there (yet).

We would want to travel around, perhaps one week in each place. Ideally one week in a hotel/more luxury option and the rest in B&Bs / cheap hotels / air b&bs. We don't really like camping, well we do but not on big campsites.

We are happy to go far afield (considered Indonesia and Canada?) but equally happy to be in Europe / closer to home. Just wondering if anyone else has done a similar length of trip with young ish kids and where they went to?

Croatian islands

Oooh Azores looks nice, never heard of it but will have a look into it. Yes thought of Majorca, been before and liked it :-)

California, we went for two weeks in August but easily could have done with four as there was so so much more we wanted to see, such as Yosemite and San Francisco.

The weather was absolutely glorious.

10k for a month in the US would be nowhere near enough IMO.

Depends what you want. Mine only really wanted a pool and other kids at that age.
Italy?
South of France is hard to beat
Rent a villa in Vietnam - beware the jabs needed

Malaysia - KL, Penang and Melaka - and Singapore.

South America, Argentina has lots to do. It will be winter there so warm rather than hot.

Lots to do and very child friendly.

West coast Canada. Vancouver Island and the Rockies. Loads to see and do. You could probably manage it on your budget if you hired an RV.

BestIsWest · 10/11/2018 10:27

Just seen you don’t want to camp but I think Canada is still a good option.

I’ve not been away for a month but if we could I’d definitely consider the US (or Canada).

We have done two US road trips with our DTs - first when 4 then again at 5. They were 18 days once you added in the flights. I would have loved a few more days (3 weeks) as it would have been less of a rush to see all the stuff we wanted to plus we both reflected that it would be nice to combine a road trip/on the road every couple of days sort-of-thing with maybe 5-7 days by a beach or a pool. That would definitely be possible with a month.

We did SF to LA and then up to Sequoia and Yosemite and flew home from SF. You are not going to be able to afford a beach front villa with a pool but we stayed in a nice Airbnb with a garden in Santa Barbara and I would have happily spent time at the beach each day if we had stayed a bit longer. Or maybe a crazy week at Disney and Universal which would drive me a little mad but the kids would have loved!

We also did Pacific Northwest - flew in and out of Seattle and did Mt Rainier, Mt Hood, Portland, a fair bit of Oregon coast and Olympic NP. We stayed right on the seafront in Oregon and I would have loved a week there, playing at the beach and drinking coffee and craft beer! Or would have loved to have added on a week in a cabin in the San Juan islands.

Oooh Teds, they both appeal! I think we will save SF / La until the kids are older as have already planned that for a few years time...

I am really keen on Canada but I need to convince DH, he lived there for a year (ski season) and says he is less keen going in summer but I really want to! I just don't know where to start / what we can fit into a month but need to research...flights are quite cheap at the moment to Canada also so that is tempting.

Your main challenge is going to be budget, especially in high season but £3000 for flights, maybe up to a £1000 for car hire (but hopefully a bit cheaper) gives you about £200 a day for accommodation, food and activities. That’s pretty feasible for self catering and days at the beach or hiking around a national park. It’s much less realistic at a hotel in a big city, eating out three times a day and doing loads of activities.

The internet is your friend! There will be loads of sample itineraries online and on here. Combining various two week itineries will easily give you a three week road trip then I’d just find one place that looks relaxing to stay for a week. So if you did west coast of Canada I think I’d fancy a week at the beach/in the woods on Vancouver Island!

longshot · 22/11/2018 12:04

Yes I think we could also reduce the trip length to stretch the budget...or increase the budget a little. Definitely would love a week in a cabin on Vancouver Island! That is the bit that appeals to me the most about Canada but I need to get researching...

South Africa around Cape Town is really nice though need to take care re safety - penguins on the beach and big 5 safari at Acquila, Table Mountain etc.

Costa Rica was lovely - again lots of animals - sloths, monkeys, raccoons, coati etc, horse riding, volcanoes, rainforest. A month may be on the long side but 3 weeks could work.

Penguinsetpandas · 09/12/2018 23:27

Scandinavia might work too - Copenhagen has Tivoli and is really pretty, Sweden we are staying at an alpaca farm where kids can walk alpacas and Wild Sweden does trips to see beavers, moose and bears and Norway has fjords over by Bergen.
