me and dh may need to go, and i am anxious about leaving kids behind, would 5 days be too short for jet lag etc.
i have never done the trip before.

we went to Canada (similar distance I;m guessing) for 5 days skiing for our honeymoon (I didn't have any holiday entitlement left as it was a short notice wedding ).
I don't remember feeling jet lagged at all but it was 8 years ago so of course I might have just forgotten.

Hermykne, dh and I went to SF for 5 days before Easter. I suffered from jet lag very badly (terrible bachache during the flight, my legs hurt for the first 3 days). the first 4 nights we were in bed by 8.30 pm . The 5th we managed a very impressive 11 pm, but that's because a friend took us to a posh restaurant.
It was the first time I left the children for such a long time (7 days) and to go so far away. Got really apprehensive before going. But we had a great time, and, dare I say it? I missed them, but not unbearably

hermykne · 18/06/2007 18:37

hmmm
so its an almost no no to bring the kids!

I have been on business and have got there worked 3 days straight and flown home. Get some sleeping tablets so you can get to sleep at night and stay asleep - it works for me - no worse than looking after 2 kids at home

francagoestohollywood · 18/06/2007 18:40

how old are your children? Tbh, I don't think I could have faced 12 flight with 2 under fives for such a short time... However I would for a longer holiday. SF looked incredibly child-friendly. On the other hand, it was lovely to have some time just with dh.

Califrau, have you been to the farmers market at the ferry building on saturdays? It's been one of my fav things.

francagoestohollywood · 18/06/2007 18:44

How far are you from a bart stop?

DrDaddy · 18/06/2007 18:57

I work over there a lot and often do Sunday am flight out and Thurs eve flight back which is fine. DW came out Sat-Sat when I'd been out for a week a couple of years back when DS1 was quite small. DS1 one stayed with my ILs. Definitely leave the kids if you can. 5 days is ok for adults, but the kids will be wrecked. Especially arriving at 2pm when it feels like 10pm.

drdaddy thanks for that tip re flights.

We loved it . Would you feel utterly guilty for spending a saturday in SF on your own? (or does your dh work?). I'm dreaming of going to London for a short weekend after the summer... (yes, I've been thinking about it for at elast two years )
