Up to £6k for a 2 week holiday in August, where would you go?

First of all this isn't a bragging thread and apologies if it upsets anyone.

But that's it really, looking for some inspiration of where to holiday for 2 weeks in August with a max budget of £6k inclusive of everything?

We're a family of 4, dc will be 14 and 9 (need 2 bedrooms) looking at last 2 weeks of August travelling from London.

If it's Europe from experience we know we prefer 5* AI, we found somewhere we like in Turkey but pricing up at £6.7k, 11 nights £6k 😬Greece coming up even more. Realise it's the price of a small car, new bathroom etc etc so any ideas much appreciated.

Many thanks in advance.

If it has to be 5 star then it will probably need to be Turkey to stay within budget.
However, I would suggest broadening your search and consider 4/4.5 stars in Europe with good reviews. In my experience they are just the same as 5* Turkey rated hotels.

I really wouldn't do AI personally because its just so easy to eat out and only have to prepare breakfast in your villa. If you are hiring a car anyway to get around in then instead of going AI book a lovely villa with its own pool etc and then just eat out every day if you don't want to cook. Cyprus has a huge choice of villas with relatively cheap flights and you could do one week on one side of the island and one week on the other. We also enjoyed crete with our teens.

Mexico might actually come up cheaper than Europe depending on dates and flights.

BarbaraofSevillle · 05/11/2018 03:50

I also wouldn't do AI, because good AI, especially if you want non buffet food, is very expensive, as you have found out.

I would look at either an apartment/villa or B&B in an apart hotel so you have a kitchen.

Eating out in Greece isn't expensive, so if you got the flights/transfers/accomodation for £3/4k, that would leave plenty for food etc. See what is available on jet2holidays if their airports suit.

You might even get a free child place. If you're not set on Greece, I'd look at the Canaries, Malta or mainland Spain, but possible not Balerices, as Mallorca at least is fairly expensive for eating out.

Eat out at least once a day and if you go B&B you can have a big lateish buffet breakfast and then either a late lunch out and snacky stuff in the evening or a smaller lunch and dinner out. Couple of trips to the supermarket/mini mart for drinks and bread/ham/cheese/crisps/olives and maybe easy food like ready made pizza or cooked chicken and prepared salad. Make sure everyone pulls their weight with food prep and washing up and you'll probably have a nice holiday, within budget.

We’ve booked Sri Lanka AI for £5k, 16days (15 nights). I’d look further afield tbh.

PersonaNonGarter · 05/11/2018 05:20

I would look further afield too. That’s a great budget for Africa. You could try South Africa (although it is winter, still lots to do) or Kenya/Tanzania.

Also, America. There are amazing RV luxury driving holidays you could do for that budget.

SJane45S · 06/11/2018 14:49

Mexico would be a good option if you are stuck on the AI idea - I do agree with a couple of the PPs re AI and using that money to do something more off grid with it! It is your budget though and if you're set on AI perhaps prioritise resort over location? The reality of AI's are that you're going to spend most of your time in a resort so to some extent it doesn't really matter which country you go to other than weather & general safety.

purplepandas · 09/11/2018 20:18

Hmmm, I am struggling with the same in all honesty. I really want to go to Nova Scotia and wondering if we can do it for similar money. I am less keen on AI but the children love it.

Jaimx86 · 10/11/2018 20:47

Can you send the links to Africa please, Persona. We’ll spend £4500 as a couple in August in Greece, so would love to know where we could go in Africa for not much more.

movingagainwith2 · 11/11/2018 20:11

Long distance Sri Lanka £5k sounds up our street. Can I ask where.....

captainflash · 11/11/2018 21:56

I’m not sure you’d get the best of South Africa in August.
I’ve visited family in Cape Town frequently and August can be a bit miserable. We’ve had days that actually felt very cold and the wind can be bad too. It doesn’t make sight seeing much fun.

Also, if you’re in Cape Town itself, some of the things you might want to do (Table Mountain, Seal Island, whale watching in Hermanus...) might not happen. We had family spend a whole week waiting for a day for the cable cars up the mountain- it never happened!
I wouldn’t bother at that time of year

anniehm · 11/11/2018 22:54

Personally I would suggest considering a road trip - we have done many but my favourite was driving through France and Spain then back on the long ferry from Spain. We book 4 or 5* hotels with breakfast and eat out the rest of the time - works out at about £5k all in including petrol, entrance fees, donations to free museums/churches, everything. We did Germany and Italy once - nearly 3 weeks though but a similar budget. My kids really enjoyed it similar age to yours.

If you really want 5* resort hotels consider b&b and eat out, a two bed suite works out at £200 a day we find

Longdistance · 12/11/2018 00:08

@movingagainwith2 We are staying at the Club Dolphin Hotel in Sri Lanka. We don’t have direct flights, hence why it was cheaper. We went through an online travel agent rather than Virgin.

movingagainwith2 · 12/11/2018 07:36

Thanks long distance. Looks lush. Will be looking into that one......

Longdistance · 12/11/2018 13:55

🌞
It has rave reviews on trip advisor, so works for us. Travel bag and Destination2 were really helpful. We rang both to get the best deal, hence 15 days rather than the usual 14 days.

Noddythefirst · 14/11/2018 07:50

Have you looked at any of the Ikos hotels in Greece?
