Dublin concert 😊

Susiesue61 · 01/11/2018 18:32

I am taking DD to Westlife next July in Dublin 😆(promised many years ago when they split!) The only hotel we can afford is at the airport. I like to worry well in advance - will it be easy enough to get back after the concert?
Thanks

Before you decide on the airport hotel what about B and B or airB&B or maybe a hostel with a double room en suite?

Zaor · 01/11/2018 20:34

You could probably get the Aircoach to Drumcondra but thats to/from the actual Airport I think. Which hotel are you thinking of staying in? Its probably about 20 mins in a Taxi but I'm not sure how easy they will be to get after the concert. The number 16 bus also goes from the Airport - this will be the cheapest option and I expect there will be extras on that night.

Where are Westlife playing? Is it the Aviva (on the southside) or Croke Park (northside) in Dublin?

There may be some MNetters who could advise you on other locations to stay depending on the answer.

SgtFredColon · 01/11/2018 20:50

It’s Croke Park. It’s not too far from airport so might be okay.

Idontwanttogo · 01/11/2018 20:52

It's 9km from croke park to dublin airport. A taxi shouldn't cost too much

WhatchaMaCalllit · 01/11/2018 20:54

OP - what is your budget for accommodation? If you've been browsing on line and have a few other options in your budget, if you like you can PM me (as I live in Dublin) and I might be able to advise you on transport links and alternatives?

The travel lodge by St STephen's green is a clean central modern more than adequate hotel. I stayed there once when my friends stay in the Octogon, ha, I joined them for breakfast the next day.

Minniemagoo · 01/11/2018 20:59

It will be bonkers leaving Croke Park after the concert. You could get a bus from Drumcondra (top of Jones Road so 5/10 min walk) to the airport (41 bus) but it will be very busy and you may not get on. TBH your best bet would be to walk back towards the city and get a direct bus to the airport from Connolly bus station or the Quays.
If money isn't a cost taxis do pass by pretty after a concert but you would have to be quick to get one.
Do check your hotel though as some are no where near the airport (eg Ballymun and Clare Hall which are not on direct routes).

The Maldron on Parnell St is also very near croke park and is a ''budget'' hotel. I only ever stay in budget hotels.

SgtFredColon · 01/11/2018 21:03

Jung even the budget hotels are really expensive when there’s a concert on.

SgtFredColon · 01/11/2018 21:04

The Maldron is €360 per night the night Westlife are playing for example Shock

SnipSnipMisterBurgess · 01/11/2018 21:06

Which hotel is it? You might have to walk northbound 1-2km and just flag down a cab. You’ll eventually get one. It will be busy but there will be a great atmosphere.

Susiesue61 · 01/11/2018 21:52

Thanks all! Its the holiday inn express. Should have been clever and bookd the week before we got the tickets 😠 Am worried about not being able o get a taxi. Would we be better in the city centre?
Hotel booked but not paid for yet

I've been to Dublin a few times for concerts and stayed in hostels - usually you can get rooms for 2 people sharing upwards, so doesn't have to be a dorm type room. We've always gotten private en-suite shower rooms, though presumably this would vary from place to place. Fairly basic, but totally adequate, clean and much much cheaper than a hotel. I can't remember which specific ones we stayed in but there have been a few, all v central - you'll find examples easily on google.

Minniemagoo · 02/11/2018 12:36

The holiday inn express Dublin Airport is not actually at Dublin airport, it's in Santry so the express buses won't help. On the plus side the 16, 41 and 33 buses pass on the main road so you have a good few options.
If you go for the Stephens Green option you will be walking further and its a bit of a pain if you are flying into Dublin airport but would be better if you are around for longer than the night as you will be in the city whereas Northwood/Santry is mainly residential with some nearby restaurants (Gourmet Food Parlour is yum) and a McDonald's.

Have u tried the Maples hotel? Or the skylon in drumcondra? Both are walking distance from Croke Park.

pleasegotowork · 02/11/2018 12:57

Or a neighbour of mine does b&b. Not fancy but lovely people. We're walking distance from Croker.

Radyward · 03/11/2018 23:07

The travel lodge in blanchardstown d 15 ?
Plenty of b and b places in drumcondra. Lovely old red brick houses ( not all of them obviously and walking distance too !)

pleasegotowork · 04/11/2018 13:02

Just thought of another small hotel - Egan's on Iona Park in Glasnevin. That's easy walking distance too. And as pp said, there are lots of smaller b&bs in Drumcondra.

OP I think it would be nicer to stay local. There'll be a great atmosphere around for it. Lucky you that you got tickets. 2 ofor my colleagues were online at 9pm that day - one got tickets and the other didn't so I'd say it's going to be a great gig. I'll be listening in my back gardenGrin
