We've never been on a skii holiday. Any recommendations for a nice ski resort for beginners please? me, DH and our boys (10 and 2).

We are doing a 2 week Italy and Greece trip in December, it'll be nice if its somewhere near there.

La Thuile in Italy might be a good option because it connects to La Rosiere in France and your ski pass covers both. I prefer to stay in La Rosiere, more for the feel of the place, but like the Italian side for skiing as there are more red and black runs. However, you may prefer to stay in La Rosiere as I think it is more family friendly and there are definitely better beginner runs.

Avoriaz is great for beginners or a smaller resort like Valmorel

Le Deux Alps in France. Loads of lovely blue runs. Even really high up on the glacier.

Passo Tonale in Italy is a fairly small resort which is great for beginners

Thanks all.

Pls forgive my ignorance - what are red runs/black runs etc?

Can anyone pls recommend a website where I can read basic info and understand the terminology etc?

Also, roughly how much should I budget for the trip? We are looking for comfortable but clean accommodation (in the lines of Holiday Inn etc)

DH wants a skiing holiday (he can ski - although hasn't for 20 years!)... with me and the 2DDs(never been) who are 16 and 12. Is there anywhere (cheap) that will suit us and that provides all equipment and ski stuff? Don't want to be buying loads of stuff if we never go again... TIA Smile

Slopes are graded easy to difficult from nursery, green(mainly in France), blue, red , black , in
US they also add diamonds! Beginners typically can manage a blue by end of first week. There are different types of lift from magic carpet and rope tows in nursery areas to buttons which pull you up from a circle behind you thighs, tbars which pull two at a time with a bar behind your thighs, chair lifts which are suspended seats, gondolas which are enclosed cabins and cable cars. It might be worth trying lessons at one of the snowdomes to familiarise yourself.

Andorra is traditionally cheap but many smaller alpine resorts also offer value without being too busy. There are tour operators who can supply clothing as well as the usual skis/boots/helmet package and prebookable lift pass. Many offer inclusive packages. However skiwear is pretty cheap in Lidl, Aldi and Sports Direct.

Second Sports Direct for cheap ski gear. Decathlon is also good.

And hire your skis, boots, poles, helmets of course!

Lessons are a must, otherwise you will sicken yourself pretty quickly. It’s not difficult, but you need an instructor to help you get started. A good option is a couple of hours lessons in the morning and then free the rest of the day.

YouTube is a good place to head for some basics. Just search for ski basics or something. It helps to see videos with a narrative.

Have a wonderful time! There is no other family holiday like a ski holiday. Smile

We loved Alpe Cermis in March this year; it was our first ski trip!
