Recommendations for Alps in summer

Can anyone recommend a good resort for a summer holiday in the Alps next year?

Ive seen some cheap flights to Geneva or Zurich. Flying to Innsbruck is also a possibility.

I would like a medium sized resort with good and easy access to chairlifts/cable cars into the mountains and other things to do for DSs 14 11 and 7

Some resorts have summer cards giving free or reduced prices on the chair lifts but Im going around in circles a bit trying to find a nice location.
We would ideally not need a car but some of the airport transfers seem to be really expensive so we may have to as long as it isnt too far from the airport.

Any ideas?

So glad I found this thread! We're planning Alps this summer too. We're not really resort people - any recommendations for smaller hotels or self-catering? We're probably looking around Annecy or Samoens. We'll drive from the UK, so public transport not an issue.

I have been to a number of alps holidays in the summer. My number 1 resort was Wengen in Switzerland.

Just stunning- the Lauterbrunnen valley down one side and the Monch, Eiger and Jungfrau mountain range on the other. Sit on the bench in front of the church for the most amazing view you will ever see! Loads of great walks and day trips out up the mountains on the funicular railways and cable cars.

Other resorts I have really enjoyed are:
Chamonix ( France)
Zell am See ( Austria)
SaasFee ( Switzerland)
Chatel ( France- right on the border with Switzerland)

Also looking at the alps for this summer, so been reading this thread with great interest. Does anyone have good recommendations of where to stay? Looking for somewhere which has at least 2 bedrooms and ideally a swimming pool so there is something to do when the boys want a bit of down time. Looking at France I think, found some cheap flights in and out of Lyon and then happy to drive a few hours once landed if need be.

We flew to Munich and went to garmisch partenkirchen, brilliant holiday. (Have also been to morzine and would happily go back, also great)

I've just booked a place in France with this company www.alpsaccommodation.com. They've got some really nice properties, and I think some of them had pools. A word of warning, things seem to get booked up quite early!

I love Zermatt and Chamonix. Annecy is pretty but not spectacular.

i adore Chamonix. I have been taking my kids there since they were small and now they are young adults they take themselves.
So much to do in summer and winter.

We have been on several summer holidays to the French Alps and I'd recommend Samoens Chalets de Layssia or La Reine des Pres and Les Gets Residence Annapurna. Hotel Monte Bianco in St Gervais is good value for anyone looking for a club hotel. Often there are good discounts available on two week summer holidays. We have used Peak Retreats for alpine summer holidays and their prices include the ferry.

I forgot to say that we always drive for alpine summer holidays as it is really useful to have a car to visit places like Annecy or Chamonix on day trips. If one is self catering it also means you can stock up at the larger more reasonably priced supermarkets. I imagine that if you are going for two weeks it would be more expensive to pay for flights and a hire car than use your own car and drive all the way.

Mocha70 we're planning to drive to Samoens next summer. Do you stop en route? We like to explore a bit on the way, so we're looking to stop for either one or two night each way (could be two nights in one place if lots to do, or two separate places if there's just something to do for a few hours). So - any recommendations of places to break the journey?

We stayed at Alpe Cermis in March for a ski trip bu the area looks lovely for summer. There is an alpine coaster in the neighbouring resort as well in the summer time.

brisklady - generally speaking we stop for a night but just to break the journey rather than explore. We tend to use Accor hotels eg. Ibis Styles Troyes, Novotel Reims, Dijon or Beaune. Once we spent a day in Reims. Another time we stopped at the Novotel at Disney and went to Disney for 24 hrs - however it was cost effective for us to do this as we had a Disney annual pass including free parking so just had the Novotel to pay for. I would not particularly recommend driving back via Paris though. The easiest route to the Alps is Calais - Reims - Troyes- Dijon followed by A39.

Thanks Mocha, that's helpful. We were considering a couple of days in Paris but I'm now thinking that it's too much effort and that we'd be better going there separately some time for a long weekend.

We love mountain summer holidays! I would highly recommend the Slovenia and the Julian Alps . We stayed in a Kobarid. Not as expensive as the Swiss/ Italian alps and just lovely. We flew to Trieste and then picked up a hire car.

Tallace · 18/11/2018 09:57

Thanks for all your suggestions. After a lot of researching we have booked an Airbnb near Serfaus in Austria.

I chose that area because there seems to be a lot to do for kids -several mountain top adventure parks, swimming lakes, outdoor pools.
It looks great hope we get good weather!

Earlier this year we stayed in rented accommodation in Sarnen, on the banks of the lake. Sarnen is a small lake to the east of Brienz and Thun.

You need a car to go to various places, so would need to hire.

We stayed in the most remarkable house, overlooking the lake and the mountains. There were 15 of us! It has a children's playground in the basement - as my GS said "There is a Play Planet in the house!!", so if you are taking children it is ideal. bijou-sur-lac.com/

We spent our summer holidays in the Val di Fiemme region of the Italian Dolomites and we loved it!! Free cable cars and chair lifts pass from accomodation and also free bus service between resorts. Great value for money compared to other resorts. The tourist board will also arrange collection from the airport if you don't hire a car. If your on Instagram I have saved our trip in our Story Highlights. Just search for Around the World in 18 Years.
