Swimming trunks suitable for use in French swimming pools

This has been a problem over the years. What sort of swimming trunk can my DSs wear in a French swimming pool? At the place we are staying this year the advice is:
"Slip de bain obligatoire, short ou équivalent interdit"
So do they have to wear the sort of speedos now only used in swimming races or are short swimming trunks with a mesh lining acceptable? If they have to wear speedos I can't see my teenagers going anywhere near the pool!
Does anyone know, please?

Bump (or rather not as that is what DS wants not to show)

Very often its the Speedo type I'm afraid. I think they could wear the ones with little legs - you know the tight fitting ones - a bit like cycling shorts

We had this problem a couple of years ago. DH's swimming shorts (with the mesh lining) were not permitted. He had to go to a local sport's hsop and buy proper fitted type trunks. He hated them - and they were quite expensive names ones to as was only shop we could find - and has never worn them since. He only bought them as DD was so keen to go in the pool.

My goodness, we are for France this year & I hadn't even thought about anything like this.. why the restrictions on what swim wear they can wear?

Lilymaid · 12/06/2007 21:11

Oh dear, looks like DSs will not be going anywhere near the pool. I can see that there is a good reason not to permit any old shorts in the pool, but proper swimming trunks? Anyway, I shall swim and DH has an approved pair that he bought in a hypermarche years ago and has never worn outside France.

Shorts with or without linings are not accepted. dh had some Maru short style lycra trunks which are more flattering than skimpy Speedos (M and S had some cheaper too). It is for hygiene reasons, I think, although the pool weren't really that forthcoming and don't insist on hats.

Speedos (lol)

Something else to add to the shopping list then!

Oh well, that's the French for you, she says in her typical rosbif manner.

Definitely the speedo type - my daughter went on a school trip to France last week and that was one of the really really definite things the teachers stressed! One teacher reckoned it was so 'things' didn't inadvertently pop out!

Funnily enough, my husband and boys prefer proper swimming trunks anyway, they can't stand the shorts-type ones, and I'm glad because I think they look awful!

I bought DH a pair of nutcrunchers about five years ago. They are still in the bag, as he has never been challenged about his shorts on a french campsite despite the stated rules.
