Bahhh driving myself a bit mad reading various bits and pieces about travelling in Sri Lanka when in early pregnancy
My husband and i are due to leave for Sri Lanka in a month, for 6 weeks. I'll be 10 weeks at that stage, and looking for any advice on whether it is safe to travel in Sri Lanka in first trimester. Our main concerns are Dengue and Malaria.
If anyone has any advice or been in the same situation would LOVE to hear! Star

the linked site from the FCO says that there is a low risk of malaria.and no prophylaxis required.

dengue is a risk, as everywhere.in the tropics. as a short term tourist you would be unlucky but if you are you will be sick as a dog, pregnant or not. Lots of deet and hope. and that applies to both of you.

odds are low, but if you do get it think hard about going back to the tropics.

Have you covered any health needs that you might have whilst you are out there? are you going to be near health provisions like hospitals and doctors or are you travelling off grid? I suggest you take a copy of your maternity notes with you and recognise that you may not feel as fit or as well as you hope if you are carrying things and travelling around. I hope you have really good travel insurance and that they know that you are pregnant and will cover anything whilst out there.

make sure you can use the deet in pregnancy and take hand gel sanitiser and use it frequently. agree that the odds are low but not nil. Personally, I would postpone the trip but accept that I am one of those people who frequently gets sick when they travel despite lots of precautions.

I would also take a basic first aid kit with you and learn how to say "I am pregnant" "I am xx weeks pregnant in the local language.
