New York hotel for Christmas/New Year

Where is it good to stay in Manhattan for Christmas and New Year?

Not looking to party or be out late, but would like somewhere central and close to sights.

Thinking mainly of hotels but a serviced apartment or somewhere with a small kitchen would be good.

It will be me, DH and our 10 yo, and our first visit to New York.

I would look at chains like the Staybridge Suites or Embassy Suites; these are family friendly and many also offer breakfast as part of the room rate.

The period between Christmas and New Year can be very busy indeed in NYC. Many more people seem to descend on this city then and the likes of Times Square are rammed with people walking about. It can also be very cold indeed with thermals being a must have. I was there last December at that time and I can certainly attest to it being freezer like cold with windchill added. If you do not like such cold I would consider visiting at a different time of year say late spring or early summer.

We stayed at the Hotel Beacon on the Upper West Side last December. Great location, close to the subway, central park just around the corner, trader joe's by the subway station plus Fairway and Zabar's for other food shopping options as well as plenty of great places to eat nearby. The location was ideal for us and I would stay there again in a heartbeat. I would never stay in Times Square/Midtown.

The hotel has a kitchenette in each room which was great, we got hot food from Whole Foods one night and Fairway another.

It was -11 on our first day and snowed!
