Amalfi Coast

Hi all,

I'm looking at going to the Amalfi Coast in May but I have no clue on the different coastal resorts. I've been having a look through trip advisor but would love opinions.

It's a 30th birthday trip which we will hopefully be child free for, looking at around 3 nights and flying in to Naples, we like music and the hustle and bustle so we don't need any where too quiet. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Thanks

Sorrento is beautiful and busy!

You'll get busy in Naples - it's a very alive place. It's also scruffy, grimey & I wouldn't want to be out late at night in a lot of it. Having said that, it's worth a day. With apologies to the PP, while I've not stayed in Sorrento I've been there twice when I was younger & even more judgey & my impression was that it was built up with lots of hotels that looked like they'd been thrown up to make a buck & loads of Brits, many of whom seemed older. Positano is beautiful but not cheap. I really liked Amalfi & had a good time there - it's a very pretty town. I'm not sure how much hustle & bustle you're really going to get on the Amalfi coast though, it's more pretty town squares with restaurants than night club strips.

What are you planning to actually do?

DH and i went to the Amalfi coast and didn’t massively like it, apart from Positano. But if you like music and “hustle and bustle” it doesn’t have that. Naples will but I don’t think it’s a particularly nice city.

How about Barcelona?

The Amalfi Coast is absolutely beautiful and there's plenty of hustle and bustle (assuming by that you mean plenty of people rather than the chance to go clubbing). Positano is gorgeous but too packed with people for me and very expensive - it's a day trip rather than a base, I think. Amalfi itself is just lovely, and above it is Ravello which is breathtaking. Maori is less pretty but has the nicer beach - it's more modern than the other villages around it.

There's lots to do - you can get a boat from Positano to Capri, which is a good day trip, and Pompeii or Herculaneum are fairly close and OK drives. The whole area is completely dependent on the terrifying SS165 road that runs along the coast - you do need nerves of steel to drive it but there's a good Sintra bus service.

I’d stay in Sorrento, so beautiful, and do day trips to positano (by bus) and Capri (by boat). We went one May for our honeymoon, it was amazing.

Thanks all, I'll have a look.

When I say music I definitely don't mean nightclubs, just quiet bars with local musicians, that kind of thing.

We stayed in positano, it was beautiful. Loads of lovely bars at night. We hired our own speed boat during the day and drove to Capri, it was one of the best days of my life!!

We went to Positano and HATED it. But we went in early April and think it was off-season - don't remember any bars at night being open!. Overly touristy, over priced, hotel was shite..... A huge disappointment.

I wasn't overly fond of Sorrento. Found the main street very tacky and the rest of it quite industrialised. It feels like a working city rather than tourist destination. Our driver from the airport said that many people find the villages on the train route to be nicer.

On the plus side Sorrento is great for visiting Capri and getting the train to Pompei and Herculaneum

LIZS · 30/09/2018 11:36

Sorrento is convenient but not particularly attractive and very commercial. The towns on the Amalfi Coast itself are much nicer and you can get boats to Capri or along the coastline. Unless you plan to go to Pompeii that would be my preference.

Ravello is beautiful and a bit more chic but expensive.
