Ryan Air packing allowance - can you pack your childs clothes with yours?

Sounds like they're very strict about not "sharing baggage allowances" and you have 15kg each only. Does that mean I have to pack three bags for each of us and three carry on bags? Seems like a big hassle and would much rather have one big bag and one smaller bag plus carry on bags, but don't want to get stuck at the airport!

Any advice appreciated.

You don't have to take three bags but if you take less you can't combine the weight - so each bag can't be more 15kg. You can't just pack one bag for you and you child for example and have 30kg in it...

(Hope that makes sense)

holsnovell · 11/06/2007 12:41

You each have the allowance of 15kg. Doesn't mean you have to have 3 cases weighing just that. You could have two but by the average general rules if its heavier than 32kg they won't send it or they shouldn't as its too heavy for loaders. Just don't exceed 45kg or they'll charge. Hope it helps

holsnovell · 11/06/2007 12:43

And infants don't have allowance unless you have paid extra for them to have seat

Furball · 11/06/2007 12:44

hang on - can you add your baggage weights together or not? KTP says no and holsnovell says yes?

KTeePee · 11/06/2007 12:47

The website says clearly you can't pool baggage allowances. I have seen people at the airport rushing off to buy an extra suitcase because they hadn't realised this and a new suitcase was going to be cheaper than paying the excess baggage charges....

holsnovell · 11/06/2007 12:48

Well i work at luton and thats the case where i am.

ComeOVeneer · 11/06/2007 12:49

The new regulations are to do with health and safety for the baggage handlers so no one peice of luggage must weigh more than 15kg

holsnovell · 11/06/2007 12:51

If thats what the site say's then go by that. So you have leg to stand on if prob does occur. Its new to me but then we don't handle ryan air.

ComeOVeneer · 11/06/2007 12:55

I think the bit about pooling baggage allowance means that if one bag comes in at 12kgs you can't use the other 3kgs to make a second suitcase weigh 18kg, it doesn't mean that each person has to have individual suitcases, just no case heavier than 15kgs.

KTeePee · 11/06/2007 12:58

holsnovell, Ryanair have all sorts of rules that other airlines don't - sometimes wonder if they actually want to actively discourage people from travelling...

Twiglett · 11/06/2007 12:59

I don't know but I'd be tempted to pack child's clothes in a soft bag that you can just put in one of your bigger bags when not on the plane

if its a weight issue

does that make sense

holsnovell · 11/06/2007 12:59

Really. Well don't happen where dh and i are. Do you work at airport if so where? The guys would love to be lifting just that

slalomsuki · 11/06/2007 13:02

You can't pool allowance ie have one bag at 30Kgs instead of 2 at 15kg's. You need to have no more than 15kgs per bag. Remeber though you can have a 10Kg hand baggae allowance so I tend to go with 2 15Kg' bags and one 10Kg hand bag if that makes sense

Its a pain I know.......you should try it with three kids and 4 bags for a fortnights holiday in France!!!

Ryanair are a pain but cheap

holsnovell · 11/06/2007 13:02

They did start charging people to take luggage at one point. Its ridiculous. I have never come across people having to take seperate cases. I've never done that travelling myself and i've not turned anyone away because they have not done so.

QPootle · 11/06/2007 13:04

Fantastic - thanks to all. I think I knew it deep down, just wishful thinking that I might be able to to do one big bag!

Can you manage with two 15kg bags? that's still a hell of a lot of stuff, ime!
Otherwise have one of the bags as a rucksack so that it is easy to carry - or Twig's idea is good.
And do you really need 3 carry-on bags?

(but then I am a 'travel-light devotee)

Agree they don't let you combine allowance, I was behind a lady that had to pay loads of excess even though her other bag was loads lighter , but it went wizzing off down the shute and lady had to pay excess on the one bag. Each bag is weighed seperately.
