Bag for long haul hand luggage recommendations please

Hi, I will be flying long haul UK-Australia next year and just starting to think about what I will need in my hand luggage, and more importantly, what bag I will use to put it in. I’ve seen the longchamp le pliage recommended a lot but I want something less “floppy” and that will keep things inside a bit more organised without me having to root through the entire contents to find anything. Also thinking a backpack style will be the easiest with other luggage / children to contend with. Kids will have their own bags with their stuff in so the bag for me needs to hold book/magazine, toiletries, mini first aid kit, water, passport, purse, probably spare clothes for the kids - not sure what else.

I like the Mia Tui Sydney backpack but worried it is still too “floppy” and
Won’t keep it’s shape by itself. I want to be able to use the bag when there too so it’s not just a “plane bag”. My ideal backpack is lightweight; waterproof; has pockets on the outside big enough for water bottles (but made of “proper” material, not mesh/net); has a grab handle on the top, and is big enough for the stuff I need for 24hrs on a plane! Asking too much, no?

Any recommendations please?

i would recommend this one here: www.amazon.co.uk/KROSER-Backpack-Computer-Water-Repellent-Charging/dp/B07D33PZ3Q/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_3?keywords=kroser+bag+black+and+gold&tag=mumsnetforum-21&ie=UTF8&qid=1537429728&sr=8-3-fkmr0 it is water repellent, has pockets that fit a water bottle, has large compartments and so can fit lots in. all the best for your trip!

Suggest getting some bags to organise the inside of your bag.
I have some (very old ASDA) mesh zip up bags just a bit bigger than A4. Generally gave one with kindle, tablets, phone. One full of chargers. One with passports, hotel details, visas, birth certs, boarding cards etc etc.
I also gave some roll vacuum bags (so you seal them up, and roll them up to exclude the air) for jumpers/spare clothes etc. About to try packing cubes on next trip.

This means it is fairly easy to identify which bag you need to investigate, and even if what you want us at the bottom, it's simple to unpack and repack (including at security).

I use a very unsexy walking rucksack. I think you are going along the right lines thinking backpack, but cant suggest anything.

sleep thank you! That is more or less exactly what I’m looking for! Goodness knows how I haven’t come across it myself as I have been scouring amazon for days!

Dune good call about the separate bags/packing cubes to organise inside the bag. That will definitely make it easier to grab what I’m looking for.

I had a High Sierra and now have a Samsonite back pack that has wheels. It's light, roomy, easy to wheel and if you need your hands, you put it on your back. I had my high Sierra one for 14 years and it was well travelled and abused. It still works but looks awful and my new laptop didn't fit so well in it. I've had my Samsonite one two years now and love it. I paid over £180 for it but it's so comfortable. I would have bought another High Sierra but I was living in Singapore and couldn't find one there. I bought the Samsonite off Amazon. It is borrowed often by my teenage sons as so practical. Worth the investment.

It has gone up in price but this is it.

Nairo thanks for the suggestion - that’s a lovely bag but way out of my budget and I don’t travel enough to justify the cost!

sleep one of the Amazon reviews mentions the zips not being very strong/durable... have you found that to be the case? Also roughly what size bottle would fit in the side pockets? 500ml for example?

I fly back and forth UK to antipodes around 5 times a year. I use a big cotton Billabong tote bag for all the things you mention. I put hard things on one side and bulk it out with change of clothes, wrap etc and then I put it under the seat in front (hard things floor side) and rest my feet and legs on it. Bliss

i haven't had an issue with the zips.

i am pretty sure a 500ml bottle would fit in, unless it was mega wide :)
