Thoughts on Ryanair?

I've never flew with them myself, but my friends in Ireland use them all the time to come over to the UK due to tiny cost. They always just say 'it's an hour flight, I don't want to spend loads'.
I know they get a lot of bad press but I was surprised to learn they've NEVER had a fatal crash ever.
Any thoughts and experiences with Ryanair? specifically like the route between UK and IrelandGrin.

You get what you pay for. In Ryanair's case you pay for a no frills service that is usually punctual. If things go wrong you're on your own but I don't think they are any worse than Easyjet in that respect, and on the route I fly regularly I find Ryanair more punctual.

I had a Ryanair flight cancelled last winter due to weather issues, and I got refunded very promptly - but I didn't claim for anything else (was travelling for work so just rebooked on another carrier). I know people who claim for expenses can wait a long time and have to be persistent before the claim is settled but again that is also true of other budget airlines.

I c that they have changed the hand baggage rule. When I flew with them in the summer you were allowed a small bag and your hand luggage, hand luggage was taken off u at gate if u didn't have priority so couldn't take on board which I didn't mind.

Now I c u can only take the small bag onboard and have to check in the hand luggage for a fee of £10 maybe £8 and leave it at bag drop. This is for non priority customers So they are making more money now. They say taking everyone's bags at the gate causes delay and easier to do it at bag drop.

Bimgy85 · 24/09/2018 22:30

@noenergy no, they are tricking people into paying extra. I flew three weeks ago and the new policy is you must put your hand luggage case in the hold. You have to pay if you want to bring it on board.

They word things to trick people into paying, its sick!! But yeah, you can bring your handbag and cabin bag but the cabin bag must be checked in for free while you're lining up. You have to pay if you wish to bring it on board

ambostraw · 24/09/2018 22:36

Tricking people? Its very clear on their website.

Sirzy · 24/09/2018 22:40

It’s perfectly clear when you book. Personally for that type of flight I would much rather have the options and be able to keep prices down by picking and choosing!

MadeinBelfast · 24/09/2018 22:49

I've never had any problems flying in or out of Dublin but I've had a few delays when travelling between other cities. I used to slag them off but at Easter we had an issue and their service was AMAZING - I was shocked! As others have said, if you consider them as a way of travelling from A to B rather than expecting any sort of luxurious travel experience you'll probably be fine.

rookiemere · 25/09/2018 08:08

Used them before and no major issues. They try to sell you stuff and play annoying music but so do jet2. Sadly they have stopped their fanfare when you land. I liked that it was like the old days when people clapped when you landed.

However would not use them now simply because they cancel unprofitable flights. It's not worth the risk.

Bimgy85 · 25/09/2018 08:16

Oh yes. I see the new rule coming into place. Nothing yet though, not until November Grin

PeridotCricket · 25/09/2018 08:16

They are v safe. I only use them if a) there’s no alternative b) I’m on my own c) there’s no crucial connection.

noenergy · 25/09/2018 12:10

@Bimgy85 the new rules come into force on 1st November. You will only be allowed a small handbag onboard unless u are priority.

noenergy · 25/09/2018 12:12

So the actual hand luggage will have to be paid to check in or u buy priority to take it onboard, either way u have to pay.

I didn't mind them taking it off me at the gate as at least I wansnt paying but now either way u have to pay.

Bimgy85 · 25/09/2018 12:13

Yeah tg it's not coming into place until 01 nov. flying on 7th October and don't fancy paying even more money after they force you to pay to sit together now too! They just keep adding more and more costs every year! Angry

Mistigri · 25/09/2018 12:15

Priority boarding costs next to nothing.

I don't get why people moan so much. If you want to lug an enormous case on board, then there are plenty of airlines who will let you, but you'll probably pay a higher fare.

Bimgy85 · 25/09/2018 14:43

That's not the point, it's that ryanair love to charge extra for everything and constantly think up new ideas to make more money off people

EmpressAdultHumanFemale · 25/09/2018 14:50

I've just flown to Italy & back with them, paid to bring my bag on board but not for any of the other extras. It was fine, they were punctual both ways & I'm short so legroom wasn't an issue. After some of the horror stories on here, I did appreciate the fixed armrests that meant the people next to me couldn't overflow into my space.

Yogagirl123 · 25/09/2018 14:52

Completely pants! But if the flight is just an hour or so and cheap, go for it, it will get you there.

BonnesVacances · 25/09/2018 14:54

I would only book them if it didn't matter that it was cancelled tbh.

JeanMichelBisquiat · 25/09/2018 14:56

Awful! Doesn't work out much cheaper than easyJet, and they herd you like cattle. Tell you it's ready to board, then leave you all standing at the gate for 20 mins, then another 15 mins on the stairs down to the tarmac (with the doors at the bottom locked, while people on crutches balanced on steps!), then 20 mins in 30 degree heat on the tarmac next to the planes, entirely unsupervised, with people lighting up near the plane fuelling trucks while they were at work 😂 Don't do it. It leaves you feeling utterly unholidayish.

Scatteredthoughtss · 25/09/2018 15:01

They are absolutely fine so long as you read the rules on bags.

BackInTime · 25/09/2018 15:02

Its not an amazing travel experience but then again not many airlines are these days, especially short hall. For an hours flight they are ok just think of it as a flying bus.

BackInTime · 25/09/2018 15:03

*haul 😬

solarscope · 25/09/2018 15:10

I fly once ten years ago. Bad seats, yellow blue everywhere, adds, alcohol in pouches. No thanks. Dh had to fly somewhere with them recently and said it is not that bad anymore.

My best flight was one between China and Taiwan. Flight took one hour but dinner was served :).

thegrinningfox · 25/09/2018 15:10

I fly with them at least 4 times a year and have done for 10 Years or more. They are absolutely fine. Of course you must read the t&c and follow them to the letter and consider it a bus trip. But 95% of the time they are on time.
Take your food on biardd as theirs is expensive.

For an hour flight to Ireland I’d have no issues at all.

thegrinningfox · 25/09/2018 15:14

I’d rather fly loads cheaper than less but in comfort. On a two hour flight of course. I don’t need luxury on such a trip - it is nearly the equivalent of a tube journey to Heathrow from where I live.

MrsHaaHoo · 25/09/2018 21:49

And again - they did this around this time last year. Makes me very nervous about booking with them...used them once a number of years ago and had no issues. Now with an annual holiday and three kids I'd not be risking a high chance of cancellations. Do seem to hear the same about other airlines. www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-45637471
