Meals on planes to Florida

We are going to Florida in October. We have to fly from Scotland to Gatwick then Gatwick to Orlando. Our flight out of Scotland is at 6.45am then we fly out of Gatwick at 11am.

I’m trying to gauge when to eat, we probably won’t eat before getting on the flight down to Gatwick. But will get something at Gatwick once we land before boarding our flight to Orlando,. So I’m guessing we’ll then get lunch on the plane and then a snack before landing?

Has anyone flown this route does this sound right?

That’s about right for that length of flight leaving at 11 am. There are food options at Gatwick.

What airline? But usually you get a main meal not long after take off, in your case that will probably be lunch, maybe a small snack in between, with virgin and AA it’s often an ice cream, then a second light meal before landing like a sandwich. If you’re going low cost like Norwegian though then you’ll have to pay for food and won’t get anything as standard. But personally I always bank on airline food being gross unless I’m flying first (sadly that happens rarely) so always gorge at the airport in preparation.

I've flown Manchester to Florida at 11am.

We got tea/coffee/cold drinks just after take off, then a hot lunch with dessert (think there may have been a second choice of sandwich/wrap?) then more tea/coffee/cold drinks, then ice lollies just before landing.

That was with Virgin Atlantic.

Gosh Frangipani VA isn’t what it used to be, that’s almost starvation. You do get the most food with the American carriers in my experience although quantity definitely doesn’t always equal quantity! As I said above, I reccomend eating before boarding Smile

Hi thanks for your replies. We’re flying with British Airways, so our meals are included on the international flight. Our plan is to get a pastry or something before getting on the Gatwick plane, I don’t think any of us will be able to face food at 5am when we get up and we’re not going to buy food on the internal flight. We’d rather wait until we’re at the airport.

BA are located in Gatwick's South Terminal. There are restaurants both before and after security. I would not rely on BA to fully provide re airline meals.

Link to what is available at Gatwick below

We flew with BA Gatwick to Orlando this year and I thought the food was pretty decent (disclaimer I’m not that fussy)! If I recall correctly you got a beer/wine/cocktail after take off with a small pack of pretzels. Not much later a meal either chicken or pasta in tomato/cheese sauce. The chicken was nice the pasta less so but ok for kids. Plus bread roll, crackers and cheese, some sort of dessert pot, tea/coffee, another beer/wine if required (obviously!)
Mini magnum later then afternoon tea type thing with nice chicken sandwich, possibly a scone and jam or cake cannot remember.
On way back main meal was v nice chicken curry or lasagne and before landing basic breakfast, think it might have been some sort of granola bar and croissant.
If you look on their website I think they can give you a more specific idea of what you’ll get because the menu changes from time to time. Have lots of fun Smile

We flew with Virgin at 11am ish. We got a meal around 1 which was a hot meal then a sandwich, cake and crisps an hour before landing. Plenty of drinks and some snacks handed out.

GemmeFatale · 19/09/2018 18:30

You aren’t missing out with no breakfast. BA replaced the old breakfast with a cold cream cheese bagel on UK-USA routes. It’s not good.

Thanks again for your replies everyone.
TheMotherChip that was exactly the sort of thing I was expecting, thanks for that.

We'll plan to grab something quick when we get to gatwick and then we'll be fine until we get lunch around 1ish.
GemmeFatale I agree that breakfast doesn't sound good.

Thanks again

we never rely on plane food when flying long haul. Have a good meal before you leave Gatwick. anything else is a bonus. My kids rarely eat any of the food on offer as its grim. I do lunch packs for the kids too.

I have no idea but I am SO excited for you going to Florida SmileSmileSmile
We will be planning our holiday in 2020 soon Grin

Any tips?
