Visiting Stockholm is on my bucket list, and my dH and I have an opportunity to visit in early 2019.
So tell me everything!!
Best areas to look for hotels etc as I’m clueless.

I loved Stockholm, although we went for Eurovision so did a lot of things related to that. I definitely recommend Oaxen Slip and Nytorget 6 for dinner - amazing food at both

Gamla Stan is good for hotels (I stayed here: lord-nelson-hotel.hotelistockholm.com/en/), the old town so near the Palace, museums, the Nobel Museum, the quays for boat trips etc. It is very touristy though and restaurants are pretty generic and expensive, unless you move up into the streets closer to the cathedral. You can do lovely walks up by the river (? sea probably), taking in the marvelous town hall, with nice cafes and restaurants, or cross over into Sodermalm with great views across to the city. It's quite foody over there but the main street is a bit dull and gritty so explore off. I came across some amazingly lovely allotments there too.
I enjoyed Djurgården, a beautiful park on an island, accessible from Gamla Stan by ferry. Packed with museums eg the Vasa Museum, Gröna Lund, the Abba museum You can hire a bike too. You can then walk back to the centre along the quays and the stunning belle epoque (I think) apartments lining the street.
The modern part of the city, up by the station, was being revolved when I was there and looked a bit grotty and 1970s concrete, with the usual array of shops. It might be better now though.

You must go to the market hall! It's a fabulous, over-the-top food market www.ostermalmshallen.se/en/
The website's not great but this stood out for me as a highlight. If you go during Whitsun half term, I think there is a food festival- there was when I went a couple of years ago and I think it is annual.

Really liked Stockholm - it's made up of small islands that make the city so you cross water a lot. We stayed at the Hilton which was a bit pricey but it was a special birthday trip - the rooms were great & the breakfast buffet is huge. Gamla Stan (the old town) is pretty but the one time we ate there was extortionate! We did a boat trip & the hop on hop off bus which was a good way to see as much of the city in a short time - the Vasa museum & Djurgarden (amusement park) are both worth a visit. As above, the only downside is that it's expensive so go prepared! It's also bloody cold in winter!
