I love Copenhagen! Are you going with or without kids?!

BaconAndAvocado · 31/08/2018 21:22

With kids, aged 10 and 12.

Go to papiroen (street food market) for lunch/dinner at least once! Great atmosphere, lots to choose from so definitely good for picky and adventurous kids.

Fredericksburg gardens is lovely for a stroll around. You can also see the elephants from the zoo from the gardens.

My DB lives over there, we've managed to get over there once but we had a great time.

Be prepared to spend a lot on pretty much everything.

BIWI · 31/08/2018 21:42

Carlsberg brewery was great, as was also the zoo

FabulousTomatoes · 31/08/2018 21:47

It’s bloody expensive, so plan where to eat before you go using Trip Advisor so you don’t wander round aimlessly as you will get stung if you don’t pre-plan more budget options. There was a great burger place off one of the back streets which was recommended on TA, and v reasonably priced. The street food market was very busy when we went - nowhere to sit, so try to go at a quiet time, ie not Saturday evening, like we did!

Tivoli gardens
The national museum is amazing
Canal tour
Sephora if you have a teen dd

shrumps · 31/08/2018 21:49

It's amazing but take a ton of money!!! We spent more in a weekend (just the two of us) than we have on a weeks holiday with our two kids! Not going crazy either, it's just ridiculously expensive.

LunaTheCat · 31/08/2018 21:50

Lovely. Make time for pastries in a cafe and peoplewatching - loads Scandi chic style!
You and children will loveThe Round Tower.

Jillcrewespony · 01/09/2018 18:59

Look into getting the Copenhagen card - it can be a good deal for unlimited travel and access to lots of attractions.

squashyhat · 01/09/2018 19:06

Many places don't take cash so be prepared for additional card fees. The kids will be wide-eyed in Kristiania - just don't let them get any ideas! (on-street hash and joint selling with the added excitement of a police raid when we were there)

Have you watched Travelman 48 hours in Copenhagen? The suggestions here:

www.channel4.com/programmes/travel-man-48-hours-in/articles/all/48-hours-in-copenhagen-the-guide/3919

Went last summer with kids aged 11 up. We enjoyed Tivoli, The Round Tower, swimming off the dock in swimming spaces (chilly), Solar powered boat hire round the canals, hiring bikes and cycling up to a beach/deer park, the Design Museum (surprisingly interesting chair exhibition) and the Architectural Museum (2 of our kids interested in design and engineering loved this, others were bored), Carlsberg brewery.
The teens liked the food market. I preferred sitting outside a restaurant but market cheaper.

We did cycle to the Little Mermaid on a day we had the bikes but she is small and there were hoards of people.

The food out was fresh and nice. We bought snacks at Aldi which kept cost down.

We stayed in a gorgeous old apartment near the Round Tower( Latin Quarter near the unis). Didn't spend a fortune at all. Do your food shopping in Netto( Danish type of Lidl) and just go to Irma to look( more expensive than Waitrose).Loads of Nettos near the Round Tower. Just do Tivoli once and go in the afternoon so you can stay late and see the lights. Buy the ride passes. One of the boat companies( the main one) does a discount for the boat ride and Tivoli but you may have to do it on the same day. Don't get a Copenhagen pass, they are expensive and we didn't want to do everything on it. RizRaz near the Round Tower has a fab veggie buffet and lovely burgers, very reasonable. Look for buffet restaurants. The best bits for my DC's were-

-Tivoli
-Louisiana modern art museum the train( take swimming costumes as there is a lovely beach)

  • a boat tour which went past the Little Mermaid, if you're quick you'll catch the changing of the guard after round the corner at Ameliaborg( free)
-The Danish Museum with the bog people( kids free I think)
  • the Tiger mothership( massive Tiger store)
  • Danish pastries at an old bakery near our apartment( huge but cheap)
  • 711 stores( Hmm, American and purveyors of Shlushies)

We walked to the hippy village but they didn't like it.They weren't keen on the drug sellars on pusher street. There are no hard drugs but think all our previous drugs scaremongering made them a bit Shock. We liked it though.

P3onyPenny · 05/09/2018 18:02

My kids also loved the Dop organic hot dog stands. There is one next to the Round Tower which can feed everybody reasonably.

BaconAndAvocado · 05/09/2018 18:36

DD is going to love the Tiger mothership shop!

Best tip we got for Copenhagen was to get the Copenhagen card!! Honestly it gets you free access to loads including public transport (which is good and way cheaper than taxis), aquarium, zoo, Tivoli and even a canal tour. Amazing value for a family, saves a huge amount. Zoo and aquarium were extremely well done, our kids loved both. Tivoli is an obvious mist but be prepared to drop several hundred for the whole family to do a few rides (rides are a separate cost to entry). We stayed at the Marriott which was priced than I’d have liked but was at least well located.

Copenhagen doesnt have to be expensive if prepared to do a lot of walking! ad its agreat city to get around . The train is good and buses also .

do Climb the Vol Frelsers Kirk spire if you can . Amazing ( and a little bit scary right at the top) can see for miles ... We also really enjoyed the canal boat trip (you can hop on and off),and thought it was well worth the money . And also Christiana but didnt go in the Pusher street end, but via the old fort. its a really lovely walk around the inner moat and brilliant to see the eco houses .. just remember its where people live not just for tourists.

Coffee and cake at one of the many cafes ..

Laska5772 · 14/09/2018 07:47

this link fort the church may work

LadyPeterWimsey · 14/09/2018 09:02

Find a branch of Sostrene Grene - like Tiger but very lovely things (stationery, homewares, random bigs) and still very cheap - and go wild. DD and I are planning a visit to one of the two UK stores as soon as we can.

P3onyPenny · 15/09/2018 15:44

Copenhagen is easy to walk around,we didn't really need transport. The train to Louisiana isn't included in the pass or Louisiana. We added up everything we wanted to do and buying the passes made it more expensive. I'd make a list,Google the prices and compare with and without.

Bimgy85 · 23/09/2018 00:03

Copenhagen is painfully expensive. Think 2 coffees, 2 cakes and a coke €30.

The city is nice but nothing amazing. I wouldn't go back for the price alone

VanillaSugary · 30/09/2018 12:13

This is great - I have a few days at half term so I'm wavering between Copenhagen, Amsterdam or Paris with my 11yo.
