And why?

Nosy, but have booked a week away there for next summer and am keen to see the nice bits and avoid the pitfalls.
TIA

Not especially. I was in paceville. Sliemma (?) looked nice though.

We liked it - were staying in Qawra but went to see most of the sights. Really liked Valletta and M’dina as we like historical areas/sightseeing but wasn’t so bothered about the ‘newer’ areas. We went on a boat trip to Gozo and Comino too - Blue Lagoon was pretty but packed and we got a dodgy stomach from one of the food vans there.

mellieha is beautiful. that's about it

LunaLovegoodsRadishes · 27/08/2018 21:01

We went about 13 or 14 years ago. We stayed in Sliema. We took the bus everywhere. Valletta was nice (except for the men hawking Harbour Cruise at you every five minutes) and we liked M’dina but tbh is was really geared towards the Grey Brigade. Not very fun. It may have changed though.

We are going Mellieha. A friend has been and said they loved it.
We will be going out and about on the bus to see a few things as I'm aware there's not a lot going on in Mellieha and it's a bit (lot) touristy.

I was in silema (sp) we stayed in a fab hotel with a lovely spa which helped us enjoy . We went end off August loads and loads of young folk in groups but no issues . Nice boat trip to blue lagoon but I would go for smaller and prob more expensive trip . I would do the bus tour on the first day to see which parts of the island take your fancy . I wish I had spent more time in st Julian. Silema has a great shopping mall with an amazing supermarket in the basement.
I would go back .

I’ve been several times and really like it. Lots to do, day trips to Gozo on the ferry, interesting historical sights and really family friendly. Great for diving apparently too although I’ve always had little kids with me do haven’t tried it myself

Meltedicicle · 27/08/2018 21:03

It was ok. Valletta was nice and is it Gozo near there that you can take a boat to? That was nice but I wouldn’t go back.

SleepyMcEdie · 27/08/2018 21:03

I have a friend who lives there so have been a few times. It really isn’t for me.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 27/08/2018 21:05

I have a nostalgic reason for going. My GDad went there when I was a teen and he stayed in Valetta for 3 months. I've always wanted to go and see the things he saw, so will be going to Valetta on one of our days.

We totally loved it...... (in our 40’s)

Valletta is beautiful with so much history it’s hard to get your head around. The knights of St. John and various church’s and empires’ history was fascinating. The main cathedral with its various chapels from all the regions in Europe was fascinating even if its a bit ornate for my tastes. I’m not much into WW2 but again the history of the island in the war was amazing and the laccrissa (sp?) war rooms and fort Angelo museums are really good - i found them utterly compelling. The architecture is superb. Food - mainly Italian - fab. Not really a “night life” place though - lots of bars and restaurants but everything shuts at about 11 which suits us - not looking for night clubs. And I like sitting and having a drink without being deafened by music. Jazz night at the main square was very chilled.
M’dena was interesting and easily accessible by bus.
We also went to one of the village festivals - catholic country so awash with catholic pageantary with various saints day/feasts throughout the summer and got swept up by the villagers and ended up at their celebration meal. They like a good firework too!
Gozo was nice, more beach-y, including a great kayaking round the coast.
Weather was high 20’s/low 30’s
I guess if you are not interested in the history/architecture/food/people watching/strolling style holiday and want more of a bars/water parks/beach with amenities and water sports /night clubs and leisure stuff like mini golf etc for kids then no - not so much x

Malta itself looked like a giant building site. Stayed on Gozo, quiet and pretty, and a lot greener (December, day temp 19-20 degrees).

DrMadelineMaxwell · 27/08/2018 21:31

Not at all interested in night clubs/bars. The kids are teens and love sight seeing and taking photos. We are happy to be going out in the day, relaxing at night people.
