Week in Singapore

Lucky me, I’ve got a week in Singapore while DH is at a conference, in 4 weeks’ time. MNers what do you recommend I do/see? I’m 60 and not fit and will probably melt in the humidity so will probably get around by taxi or MRT, and want to spend a reasonable bit of time indoors. Not especially interested in shopping, but I like food culture, wildlife, gardens, and colonial/WWII/any history. Have enough time to do day trips out of the city - any suggestions?

Go to Tangs and buy Singapore tea towels or elephants or even the hand painted Christmas decorations as they'll be in then. Go to Lantern bar at the top of Fullerton Bay Hotel for late drinks after dinner. Eat at Kinki's on top of old custom house. In MBS there are many nice restaurants but the food court is also good and don't miss Din Tai Fung for dumplings. Enjoy.

Thanks girlgoneglobal I'm going in January and can't wait!

Burnt Ends mentioned by two posters above appears to be booked out all this month and much of next 🙁. I hadn’t appreciated it had a recent Michelin star. Plenty of other options though!

I think Burnt Ends is no reservations. I'm not there now but it was turn up and get a table/queue (so odd times worked better)....

Hi, thought I’d check in and let you know how my Singapore break went, as you were all so helpful with suggestions.

We were there from 22-29 September, and it was HOT (plus humid of course). Even the locals said it was unseasonably hot. I had 2 days where I didn’t do much more than hang out by the pool.

Our favourite outings ended up being:
Battlebox - the tour was great
Fullerton Heritage tour - a free tour for anyone (not just Fullerton guests) looking at the history of the building (originally the GPO)
(Guides for both the above were amazing)
Rooftop bar at the Fullerton to see the light show over Marina Bay
Peranakan Museum
Chinese Shophouse Museum
Museum of Asian Civilisations - 5 stars especially to the Tang Shipwreck Collection on the ground floor, one of the most stunning displayed collections of fascinating artefacts. Don’t miss it!

We had a great afternoon tea at Pollen restaurant in the Flower Dome at Gardens by the Bay. $50 ph but included entry to the dome which is $24 by itself. The food was creative and amazingly flavoured but the service was a bit shambolic.

We ate at Din Tai Fung, Flutes at the National Museum, Singapore Zam Zam, Jade at the Fullerton (gorgeous surroundings, great value set menus until you’re hit $19 for a Tsingtao!) All enjoyed. Meals were either super cheap or very expensive - drinks seemed to blow the prices out of the water.

We stayed at Swissotel at Clarke Quay, great hotel, convenient location, but noisy at night- as in thumping bass from a Clarke Quay nightclub coming in through double glazing up til 3.30am 🙁. We’ll know better next time!

Once again, thanks for your suggestions - we had a great time with your help!

Sounds like a lovely holiday! My kids were just talking about their trip to Singapore last night, must try and go back next year.
