Things to remember fur next years holiday..,

Just like the post Christmas ones this is things I need to remember before booking / going on next years holiday...

Yes, you do need to bring a big beach bag. It will come in handy for carrying crap from villa to pool. The one you looked at and then rejected 10 minutes before leaving would have been perfect!

Being a plastic cup for DS2 - if I have to listen to him clatter a glass onto a glass table top one more time. My nerves are in shreds.

Two weeks is too long in one place.

You will not use the uno cards.

We used to take a pop up laundry basket but found they would topple over once they were more than half full (we mainly holiday in the UK so normal clothes not just swimsuits and sundresses). We take Ikea bags now and put them in the wardrobe bottoms for dirty laundry, works much better for us. Then when we pack to go home we pack everyone's remaining clean stuff in one bag and fill the rest with dirty for easy laundry sorting back home.

bibblebobblebubble · 27/08/2018 08:08

Excellent thread

My things, worked out through trial and error -

Plug in night lights, as DC can’t sleep in total darkness

Spare plastic bags for laundry and generally to make packing easier on way back

Small plastic food bags and Clippits to keep stuff fresh esp if self catering

TipseyTorvey · 27/08/2018 08:23

This thread definitely needs to get moved to somewhere I can find it next summer!

Mine are:
Over door plastic storage thingy with clear plastic slots was BRILLIANT. Taken from a thread on here before i went away. Didn't lose anything as it was all visible hanging from the door. Keys, little toys, plugs etc.

Bar of laundry soap was really useful and took up much less weight space than powder.

bibblebobblebubble · 27/08/2018 08:38

Can you link to storage thingy Tipsey?

GandolfBold · 27/08/2018 08:55

Always mix luggage in suitcases rather than having each person's clothes in each case. That way if one suitcase is lost, one person won't be left with no clothes.

OrdinarySnowflake · 27/08/2018 09:01

Good thread!

I need to buy a new suitcase soon, rather than try and pull along the one with the dodgy wheel again next year...

If your ticket has baggage included, put everything other than the minimum in the hold and carry a light backpack on the flight.

Have baby wipes in your hand luggage.

A small cross body bag for purse, phone, passport and boarding card as well as rucksack is handy so you don't have to keep taking the backpack off while holding small dcs hand.

Buy sticker books in the pound shops before hand and have films on the laptop (if taking) to entertain the dcs for a bit when you want to get them out of the sun, without spending a fortune.

OP I'd really like to save this thread for next year - would you mind if it was moved to Travel?

bigfishlittlefishtupperwarebox · 27/08/2018 09:22

I agree. OP please report this thread and get it moved somewhere that it won't disappear!! I need this for my first holiday abroad with our toddler in February...

CointreauVersial · 27/08/2018 09:27

It is very hot in Florence in August, and walking round it will make your DH and DCs very irritable, sweaty and grumpy, and quite unable to appreciate all the lovely churches and bridges.

AnneWiddecombesHandbag · 27/08/2018 09:43

For children take an iPad or tablet. We had many lovely evenings sitting outside sea front hotels having a couple of drinks in Majorca. Yeah yeah yeah it's lazy parenting blah blah blah but it's our holiday too and they were happy and we were happy. Everywhere has Wi-fi now.

Remember to check the flight times beforehand and not rely on the original booking details. That will reduce the stress of having to reorganise things having realised the flight is later than you thought it was going to be.

The house you are staying in next spring is very warm - you do not need lots of woolly jumpers you need thin casual tops. Lots of layers.

We will definitely use the Uno cards.

SophieLMumsnet · 27/08/2018 11:24

OP, we're going to move your thread to Travel to save it from disappearing. If you have any problems with that at all, just let us know! Flowers

WipsGlitter · 27/08/2018 12:36

No problem!!

Agree with everyone saying remember you will be TOO HOT!!

qooz · 27/08/2018 15:53

I guess it depends on the ages of the DC. Mine still came with us this year at 20 and 22.
Take only aerosol sun cream. Everyone will ignore all the other tubes or bottles and the aerosol will run out first.
Uno gets played every day by the pool and always has done.
A pack of cards for in the bar at night.
No-one uses the nice beach bag they shove everything into the rucksack they used as hand luggage.
Chargers in hand luggage as well as a power pack.
Don't bother with extension leads as most hotels have usb charger slots on the wall.
Remember to bring the favourite beach ball that has been coming on holiday with you for the last 20 years.
All your shoes will hurt after three days. No idea why. This is why you need the full shoe collection.

namechangedtoday15 · 27/08/2018 19:37

Just thought of another - pegs. Windy balcony meant my bikini bottoms, left on said balcony, were "handed in" after landing in the car park and as I walked to breakfast, the receptionist handed them back saying "I think these may be yours!"

OrchidInTheSun · 27/08/2018 19:47

Bring a jumper. Even if it's 22 degrees when you leave and 32 degrees while you're away, it will inevitably be 14 degrees when you land at stupid o'clock when you come home (and I am definitely taking the point about saving £200 next year and will never again get an 'evening' flight which ends up being a middle of the night one!)

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 27/08/2018 19:56

Oh yes ,
flying out at 7am is fine , even though it means getting up at 2am , leaving the house , driving, parking, bus to airport, check in, breakfast at the airport. Get there early afternoon.

On the way home , a late flight is a pain in the arse.
OK, breakfast and sunbathe , then its shower, check out, hang around.

Add a very aggrevated baby on the flight ( ear blocking probably worse for a tiny mite than an adult) , the whole check out in reverse and the bloody M25 closure for overnight roadworks .........not good.

Return flight for mid day is far better .

lifelongfrugaleer · 27/08/2018 20:11

Giant elastic bands to hold your towels onto the back of the sun bed.

I can't lay claim to this one as I saw it while I was away last week.

lifelongfrugaleer · 27/08/2018 20:13

Ear plugs

lifelongfrugaleer · 27/08/2018 20:16

YY to pegs. We have a pound shop camping washing line. It's great

Compeed blister plasters. Someone will get a blister at some point. Nothing nice about seeing peeled off plasters floating in the pool.

MollyMallyMindy · 27/08/2018 20:39

Charging cable for every device, and enough adaptors to plug them all in at once...
One fleece with pockets per person.
A few sandwich bags are handy for taking leftovers home. Have to say that we ate very well at the airport with our huge picnic and enjoyed the flight back no end with excellent food and adequate Easyjet booze!

Our AirBnB house had everything important and loads of extras like child shampoo, which was handy.

Do check for location of all passports, driving licence, EHICs etc 3 and 2 months before to avoid mad panics when you've had to use a passport for ID three times since booking the holiday...
