Going abroad with a baby

DH and I are considering taking DD abroad next February when she will be about 9 months. Has anyone had a successful holiday with a baby of this age? What sort of place did you stay at? What did you bring?

We are somewhat clueless

We went to Lanzarote when our DS was 10 months. He was toddling between furniture which meant we had to keep an eye on him at all time ms, but it wasn't hard between the 2 of us.

We were all inclusive, so although I took pouches with me, we always managed to find him suitable food at the buffet for him. The hotel were also happy to provide boiling water for bottles and the was a fridge in the room for his snacks.

A good buggy, that lies right back and has a good sun shade is a must. DS stayed up with us in the evenings, we just got him to sleep in his buggy and then he'd sleep happily whether we were in the hotel or out walking.

For nappies and baby food etc, if you fly from an airport with a Boots, you can order it all to be picked up in the airport. That way it didn't count towards your weight limit 👍

I took my dd1 to zakynthos at that age. Lovely shallow and warm seas. Boat trip (self drive), olive groves. We had a great time.

That sounds nice Cotton. I like the idea of her experiencing something like sand or the sea for the first time.

We went to Sicily when DS was 7 months and DD was 3 yrs. We stayed in a farmstay and hired a car. It was wonderful. A couple of months later we went to Montenegro and stayed in an apartment with shared pool. My advice would be to just go for it. You can buy nappies when you're there so you don't need to take a week's worth.

When dd was a baby, we did a bit of interrailing and she was a fantastic traveller. I don't think I'd do it with two young DC but with one it was a breeze.

At the moment you have the luxury of going wherever you want to, without worrying about how to keep dd entertained. This may be your last chance before she's walking and holidays start to get trickier.

We just got back from two weeks in a resort in Greece

It was no problem. Plus she started crawling and it was fine just to watch her, still not very fast.

We did buy a travel pram as I didn’t fancy taking it wrecking the big bugaboo and also took a sling

She ate well just food without salt or added sugar - fish, fruit, veg and pasta etc

And slept in the middle of a huge bed, bigger than super king size

The only thing to look out for us if you arrive in the middle of the night to a London airport there may not be any trains or taxis with a baby seat

Forgot to say dd is 8 months

Did you decide anything OP?

I took DS (on my own) to Mallorca (Puerto Pollensa) at 10.5 months. He wasn't crawling though so a bit easier. People thought I was mad but it was amazing and still felt like a holiday. I took him to the beach before his first nap, then when he napped in the pushchair I could chill out and read my book in the sunshine. We went swimming every single day which he loved and the sea was warm, shallow and gentle enough to take him in.

I went all inclusive but it didn't really work for me, the buffet was a pain when I was on my own and I realised I do really like eating out so I will probably do self catering next time. But apart from that I wouldn't have changed a thing.

Planning is key though! I must have spent hours researching travel tips and locations. I'm doing the same now for next summer when he will be 20-22 months!
