There's a brilliant play park at the bottom of Victoria Park with loads of different stuff for different ages (DH was quite disappointed a few weeks ago as we went on a romantic weekend away without the kids but he thought the playpark looked amazing and said "he wished the kids were here"!)
Near to the botanical gardens is supposed to be bird avaries but we couldn't find them. The Roman Baths were cool (your 3 yr old probably won't be that interested but the 6 yr old will I'm sure) and we could have definately spent longer there.
We also did the open bus top tour which was very informative and you can obviuosly step on and off so the kids wouldn't have to sit for a whole hour and wriggle.

it's called victoria park.

longleat is about 30 mins drive

the egg theatre (children's theatre)

cafe rouge for lunch (top of milsom street)

ben's cookies for coffee/hot chocolate and fab cookies (in the alley behind monsoon).

oh yes, the bus is great - my 3 year old absolutely loved it and still goes on about the big double decker bus

Try a boat trip on the river - quite short and inexpensive so good for little ones.

Norwood Farm just a few miles south in Norton St Philip
