Hello
We're going to Australia in November and will be staying in Hong Kong for 2 nights.
I want to stay on the island in Central ideally and so am looking for good child friendly hotels please!?

Some don't offer breakfast... do you think with a baby it's better to have a hotel
With breakfast??
Would apartment be better?
Any recommendations please!?
Thanks

This is a thinly disguised brag isn't it? Why would a 9 month old care either way?

spotspot · 17/08/2018 11:08

That's a bit mean!

Yes, I'd get a hotel breakfast. I've only really stayed in the Excelsior in Central. There's two others I've liked but I can't remember the names. Hotels in Hong Kong are pretty good generally. Obviously make sure there's a travel cot if you need one.

Apart from that, enjoy!

Hotel rooms in Hong Kong can be quite small as standard so I can see why you're wondering about an apartment. It depends on your baby really. Mine always liked to be asleep in a dark room by about 8pm so it was better for us to either have a two room suite type thing or an apartment (otherwise you're just sitting in a dark room all evening). Factor in jet lag and that can be worse as none of you can get away from each other.... if you have two connecting rooms or an apartment then at least one of you can rest while the other one sits with the wide awake baby!

There's a good website called jetlagrooster or something that can give you details of how to slowly adjust your body clock in the days leading up (use for your baby too).

Good luck!

We're stopping in Hong Kong for a couple of nights in November too, but traveling in the opposite direction. We're considering going with an airport hotel for convenience but I'm interested to see what others suggest. I wouldn't have worried too much if it had breakfast as it's easy enough to pick up basic breakfast supplies to have in your room if need be.

Todamhottoday · 17/08/2018 11:27

What kind of budget and whats your style of hotel?

MozzchopsThirty · 17/08/2018 11:37

What's your priority?
Budget?
Room size?
Location?

AttilaTheMeerkat · 17/08/2018 13:14

The hotel you originally stayed in is a bit of a way out from Central.
I would look at the Conrad Hilton, Shangri La or JW Marriott as these are more centrally located in the Central area.

I like getting a hotel with breakfast with DS as I know he's had a good meal first thing before I get my bearings in a new place. Since it's only for two nights I'd do hotel over apartment.

Squashy how is it bragging? It's not as if OP has said the 9 month old requires their own butler.

I’ve stayed in many of the HK big hotels- what’s your budget?
Breakfast- depends on whether you like it as a thing or just sustenance?

Meesh77 · 24/08/2018 10:03

This will sound bonkers, but we stayed in a family room at the YMCA (near the star ferry) when we were in the same position as you. Our child was 18 months. She had a separate part of the room. Pretty sure there was a buffet breakfast. Somebody recommended it to us (we were going to Australia for 12 months so it wasn’t really a holiday).

Thank you all for your advice
Really helps!
I was thinking of an apartment purely so that if DS naps or needs to go to bed early then we can still be up in another room.
Also if we had a kitchen then we could do his food.

As for hotels. Would ideally like a fairly decent size - approx 23m or more and I would ideally like to have breakfast as an option.

Looking at hotels approx £350 max for 2 nights.

Is central a good location for a baby ... someone said there are lots of steps and so not good for prams?
Would Wanchai or causeway bay be better?
Thanks all

So most 4* hotels will be decent quality but room size will vary by location/chain
HK accommodation is generally small so you don’t get giant apt like elsewhere v often
I’d avoid wan chai, it’s not a family area and the bars are seedy...
Central is lovely and peak park/tram etc all nice but it is more ££ than other areas
HK is small and easy to get about. I’d pop baby in a sling and if you really need a buggy consider the super lightweight ones that and like a back pack when folded? Makes ferry’s and transport easy.there are escalators in most places.
Your budget is fine or tiny depending on dates. October is £££ because it’s conference season for example
I’ve stayed in About 15 different 4-5star hotels and all been v similar standard with rates c.1600 night +tax, to about 2500, which is anything from 100-170 a night depending on fx) it really is all in timing. If you find somewhere you like feel free to ask about specifics

ShanghaiDiva · 31/08/2018 12:47

Agree with Meesh - the YMCA hotels is called the Salisbury, over on Kowloon but near metro and you can take star ferry over to central and wan chai. They have decent sized (enormous by HK standards) family rooms and you can also see the light and laser show (every night at 8pm) from the window.

LoniceraJaponica · 02/09/2018 22:53

If you are flying from the UK you might find the jetlag quite difficult to adjust to. When we arrived in HK we got to the hotel about about 10 am and crashed until mid to late afternoon.

PARunnerGirl · 04/09/2018 21:42

I lived in HK for many years and although I can’t help with the hotel question, I just wanted to encourage you to get out of Central/ Wan Chai/ Causesay Bay and off the island in general for one day at least! Take a ferry to one of the outlying islands like Lamma or Cheung Chau. You will feel like you have more space and also get a feel for a very different Hong Kong. Enjoy!
