if not get one NOW as I messed up and can't go on holiday on friday with dh and dd1...me and dd2 are going to have to wait to see when her passport arrives (i was misled how quickly i could get hers from the passport office phone helpline and now it's too late)

just to reiterate - you can get a renewal on the day but a first passport is min. one week....
the good news is i made a huge fuss to the people you phone to track the progress of the passport (stock response: it'll take a week) and they eventually (half hour holding on phone) put me through and - london phoned me back saying it was ready thurs am...but then rang again to say it was ready that day...ie weds...so off i trotted and the holiday is ON. but this has been a hard-lesson learned...hmmmmmm (relieved emoticon)

following this thread, i applied online for dd and ds - we're not going anywhere, but i thought after reading this i should have them done just in case ( iw in that holiday trip of a lifetime you know!!!)... so applied online yesterday and they arrived today... now i have tp do all the fiddley bits, birth certs etc... so many thanks for this little nudge... - i feel very organised!!!!!

by the way, does anyone know if the passport photo can be a digital photo taken by youeselves and then cut into the right size etc...?

ta!

SoupDragon · 19/08/2004 16:06

In thoery, yes, but it needs to be of a certain resolution and printed "on normal photographic paper".

bea · 19/08/2004 16:25

great... i've got the 'proper' ink and paper... any ideas on the resoloution...?

lydialemon · 19/08/2004 16:31

I'm reasonably sure it says in the help booklet you get in the passport pack, so it must say online somewhere. I could be mistaken but doesn't it have to have the white border? You would have to make sure it printed the correct size, as you couldn't just trim to fit......

Matonic · 19/08/2004 17:18

Ds's passport pic is a digital photo taken by me on our landing (as this meant the background would be a white wall) and printed to fit. I think the documentation says the resolution of the picture must be 300dpi. Ds was about 9 months old at the time and it was a lot easier to do it this way than get him to sit still in a photo booth.

bea · 19/08/2004 18:38

how on earth do they normally photo babies...? ds is is only 6 months old... what do people normally do when taking a photo for passport of a baby ?

Matonic - was there a white border around your photo?

The photo in DS's passport was taken by DH when DS was in the bath at 2 months old!! The passport was issued by the British embassy in Denmark and they couldn't have been more helpful, nicer or quicker. A far cry from what every here in saying about the process in the UK!

Oooggs · 19/08/2004 19:24

Photo of DS was taken at 14 weeks in our local photographers. They rested him on a white bean bag. It was great. But at 12 weeks we need to fly to Edinburgh, quickly, and needed photographic id for DS and passport wouldn't have arrived in time so had to apply for a Citizen Card (which takes a few days) and his photo on that is when he is 5 days old taken by the hospital photographer!!! Imagine him using that as id to get his first pint .

The whole thing is a nightmare. An utter nightmare. Apply early, apply often, and you just may make it.

bundle · 19/08/2004 19:48

our photo was the easy bit - local chemists, have a white curtain & they all stand there distracting dd until she does the right pose. also make sure you put the child in a bright colour - esp. if like dd2 s/he has little hair, otherwise they look like a moonhead..
really looking forward to france now, can't stop looking at our 4 passports
really don't want anyone to go through all that...

In answer to Bea, there isn't a white border around his photo as it appears in the passport. I resized the photo to the correct dimensions on the PC and printed it out. Can't remember if I cut out a white border then or not. Sorry, not much help.
