Best bars in Reykjavik

Hi all,
I'm going to Reykjavik at the end of this month for 3 days. Luckily I have a friend there who is going to pick me up, show me the sights in his 4x4 etc. I was wondering if anyone's been there recently and could recommend any good bars for the evening? I'm staying really centrally so hopefully nearish to most of them. I'm under no illusions that it's going to cost a LOT, but really just looking for somewhere quirky or interesting to try. Any ideas or suggestions gratefully received!

I have some good memories from nights at Kafibarinn.

Ah thanks! That was a place on my radar as I'd seen good things written about it. Will make it a definite. :)

Also try the soup in a bread bowl at Scarva Kaffid! We went back to there one evening and it was full of lively locals - great fun. www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g189970-d1487023-Reviews-Svarta_Kaffid-Reykjavik_Capital_Region.html

Skúli Craft Bar for good beer, and Ölstofa was recommended to us by locals.

Are you there on a Friday night? Everybody goes out on a Friday, and they stay out late Grin I would recommend where we went, but I can’t remember any of them Blush

Thanks guys! Soup in a bread bowl sounds bloody amazing. Sadly I'm there Mon-Thurs, so have Monday and Tuesday nights to go out, as I don't want to miss my flight on Thursday morning.
Did any of you go to the fleamarket - Kolportid I think it's called? I can't seem to find out if it's only on at weekends.

Even better, pick up some beers (or alcohol of your choice) at the duty free in arrivals - you’ll find all the Icelandic passengers in there stocking up!

In Reykjavik alcohol is only available in specific alcohol shops (outside of bars, obvs) which are expensive and have limited opening hours.

Definitely going to be stocking up on alcohol in the duty free when I arrive!! Luckily my friend has just had his birthday so has an apartment full of beer we can raid before heading out. Really looking forward!

Get the appy hour app - we used it to bar crawl up the main drag. This place was fun to eat www.icelandicstreetfood.com - when we went you could have as many refills of soup, free coffee and cakes and the owner/host is quite a character, chatting and singing with everyone and he brought out 'the shark' if you wanted to try it. Buy booze on your way in at Duty Free and take a flask with you to carry warming boozy coffee with you. We did this www.grayline.com/tours/reykjavik/iceland-beer-tasting-taste-the-saga-5963_12_12130_192/ which was a lot of fun - it's not a tour though - it's a talk but really interesting.

We used this site to plan a lot of things - really useful stuff on it iheartreykjavik.net
