NYE in Vienna - where to stay? What to do?!

So my lovely DP has surprised me and booked us flights to Vienna for New Years Eve, 30th Dec to 2nd Jan.

We don't have a very high budget for hotels but I thought I'd ask you lovely lot for some recommendations of where to stay, what to do and most importantly what food to eat Grin

I went to Vienna a few years ago. There's lots of very grand buildings to see for free. I found it quite expensive and I was living in London at the time. The tram that goes around the ring road is good to get your bearings.

We went out to the outdoor theme park area just out of the centre thee preta I think it's called. There is an old ferris wheel which is pretty cool. I went in early November and found it really cold so I think you'll need to wrap up!

We found somewhere to stay on trivago or similar. I did find hotels quite pricy so I'd recommend booking early.

@Gorrillagirlfanclub oooh thanks very much! Yes I think we'll book the hotel soon as have found quite good deals on a few.

Don't suppose you've been to Prague by any chance and could compare expensiveness?!Grin

We’ve stayed at Hotel Daniel and really liked it. I would definitely go for a cocktail at the American Bar and a coffee at one of the city’s many beautiful coffee houses www.wien.info/en/shopping-wining-dining/coffeehouses/in-the-old-city and go see an exhibition in the museums quartier, the Klimt one is great.

I second a ride on the ring road tram. The park mentioned upthread is called Prater. Naschmarkt (a food market) is also quite nice.

I haven't been for quite a few years and can't remember much about our hotel but I do remember it was significantly more expensive to eat and drink out than other 'nearby' cities we travelled to including Prague/Budapest/Krakow/Bratislava.

Sure it will be very pretty at that time of year, but also potentially very chilly.

Thanks very much for your help everyone! I'll have a think Grin

It's pretty mad on NYE, and packed with Italians. Lots of firecrackers going off from late afternoon.
