I am making a press list and I am doing very well but thought I would look to mners for inspiration you are such a helpful and informed lot

I also wonder how many people find out in the national press about days out/ regional things for kids if they are not near London or do you just read your local paper?

you know like festivals and stuff

what national papers would you look in? or radio?

I know this is a big imposition but I have prepared a special afternoon tea as a thank you

I use Netmums but I think that is a dirty word on here now!

I also use local papers and local library.

Cappuccino · 31/05/2007 16:28

mascara ta - I put those kind of flyers out in my area!

I'm just trying to find out where people actually find out if they do so by way of newspapers etc

Capp, we often get little flyers in school bags.
Reckon it's worth phoning schools and asking if that would be OK

Alistair Aird's Good Britain Guide, when it was still being published. Still have the last edition.

Tourist info offices - in new area/first day of holiday, load up with fistfuls of leaflets, starting with the thickest/most comprehensive, & scan through them that evening to identify what's up our street.

Primary Times & similar sorts of free mags in supermarkets.

I generally don't use local papers as the listings tend to be patchy & transient - I like all my info in a big hereitallisinonego bundle - then I can do my own sifting, & follow up promising stuff on websites.

Radio would only work as a heads-up of special events - I like lasting print: stuff I can hang on to and refer to when I want. So I like website links.

Local papers and radio are ok, but far from comprehensive, and useless if you want to plan more than a few days ahead (ok I rarely do!)

Tourist info places and libraries are great. Often end up with loads of leaflets and flyers...especially if DS is with me

There are some good books, but the do get out of date quickly.

Best I know of is on the web - www.IdeasForTheKids.com which covers the whole UK and is free. Found quite a few places within 10 mile I never even knew about.

There is also this site

FrannyandZooey · 05/06/2007 10:25

We have a fab local listings magazine esp for children which has everything in it

There is also a site called whatsonforlittleones which is sometimes worth a look but our local magazine knocks everything else into a tin hat really

and madeira wine? At this time of day?

BishyBarneyBee · 05/06/2007 10:26

I look in local paper
List off National Trust of local events at their properties
Brochure from local museums
Spot ads in post offices/see flyers in libraries etc
Word of mouth too of course

Then carefully write it all down in diary

So eg half term kids went to local fun day (posters locally and annual event); NT event (mailing from them); thing at local theatre (article in local paper); could also have gone to museum activity (brochure); church holiday club (mailing from church).
Phew they were busy!

MrsBadger · 05/06/2007 10:29

local paper yes, also local mag thing (like a parish mag but bigger) tat cmes through the door. And the parish mags as well.

Library, notice boards, leaflet racks in tourist information office etc (I live in a touristy town)

Also posters on lamp posts, we seem to get heaps of these, best are ones by traffic jams eg queue to park in the multistorey / get out of Sainsburys.
And there are those semi-official chipboard placards propped up round town that people staple posters to but they're mostly for plays / concerts etc rather than days out.
