The Forum

I took my DH there for his 40th last month (3 nights so about 2.5 days really)and the best piece of advice I can give is to walk everywhere, there is something worth seeing around every corner. St. Peter's Basillica was DHs favourite, I loved looking over the Forum form the Palatine Hill. It's so beautiful

Whereabouts are you staying?

Slubberdegullion · 30/05/2007 14:26

Michaengelo's Pieta in St. Peter's.

Rubyslippers · 30/05/2007 15:44

thanks for these
no idea where we are staying Dragon as DH booked it as a surprise - i do know it is about a 10 min walk from the centre ... we tend to walk everywhere anyway so will be taking comfy shoes

If you go to St Peters you can climb right to the top of the dome - fab views outside of rome and inside of the cathedral. Enjoy!

Not read whole thread, but if not already mentioned and you are into it in any way - Keats House, top of Spanish steps. And Protestant Cemetary - very peaceful.

I'm not a sort of graveyard freak or anything. |Honest|

When you go to the Colliseum, pay extra for the guided tour, it also lets you jumpy the queue. They just come up to you outside, they are genuine though. It was really worth it, we got a fantastic tour and were told loads of info, much more than you will get from reading the info boards. We went their on our honeymoon in November, I love the place.

Rubyslippers · 31/05/2007 21:24

thanks for the tip Feem ...

Ooh, yes, agree with YIAM, go to Trastavere if you can, it's really lovely and less 'touristy' than the more central areas. DH and I had a lovely meal there.

Personally, although I was glad to have seen the Spanish Steps and Keats-Shelley Museum this was the busiest of all the places we went to, literally heaving. (the Steps, not the museum, that was deathly quiet!)

With regards to the Colosseum tour that niceglasses mentioned, we took one and it was good but VERY quick (our guide took us round in twenty minutes and you couldn't go back in once the tour was finished) the second part of the tour of Palatine was excellent and the guide was very knowledgeable and informative and he filled in any gaps the Colosseum tourguide left, but I guess all the guides are different. Having seen the queues I'd definitely still agree that it's worth paying extra for the tour especiallly as there are no information signs up to tell you what things are in the Colosseum, (or the rest of Rome, unlike when you visit NT properties etc in the UK where you have placards around telling you what things are) With that in mind, I'd also recomend a comprehensive guidebook. Ours were indispensible (we had a couple of different ones) I'm sure you've already got one but just thought I'd mention it.

Oh, and the ice creams...... can you bring me one back pleeeeaaase?! lol

seamonster · 01/06/2007 13:57

The plane

Rubyslippers · 01/06/2007 15:45

thanks Dragon - what flavour would you like?!
Seamonster - LOL but with my neurotic need to be 9 hours early for everything we will definitely make it!
