Where to stay in Iceland?

Hi all,
I've booked 3 nights in Iceland for next month and am looking for somewhere to stay. A hotel nearish to the main bar areas in Reykjavik - preferably not much more than £150/night. Does anyone have any recommendations at all?
TIA

When I went two years ago, I stayed in the youth hostel by the harbour. It was a few minutes walk from the main street. I had a lovely room with three beds and an ensuite bathroom for about £65 per night. Not as fancy as a hotel but it was very clean, warm and comfy.

That's amazing Nanny - thank you so much. If I can find value like that i'll be so damn happy! Can you remember the name at all? :)

This is the hostel it looks like its a bit more expensive now - I've put in Feb 2019 (I went in Feb) and its coming up around £100 a night for a private room with bathroom.

We are going next month, and it is bloody expensive (sorry!!) and we looked at private rooms in hostels in a reasonable location, but no availability.

We have booked two Pods in a hostel @ £50 each per night. This was the best we could find with decent reviews.
Once you know where you are staying I also recommend booking airport transfers.

Good luck!!

Thanks again.
Luckily I have a mate there who's going to pick me up from the airport and show me all the sights etc, which is awesome and no need for transfers from airport. Will keep going with the search - the hostels actually look very reasonable

Another money saving tip that the receptionist at the hostel recommended to me (although I didn't have chance to go) was to not bother with the blue lagoon (v.v. expensive) but to visit one of the city swimming pools for a fraction of the price, you still get the experience of swimming outdoors in steamy hot water in the middle of winter and its more of an authentic Iceland experience rather than a tourist trap.

I pre booked the airport transfer coach, although lots of people just bought their tickets at a counter in arrivals. They take everyone on a big coach to the bus station then put you onto smaller minibuses, depending on which hotel you are going to. It was very efficient.

I used a company called GeoIceland to do the golden circle and south coast tours. I thought they were pretty good but, having only been once I can't compare them to any other companies. They did seem to time the tours so that we arrived at the main sites before the big coachloads arrived which was quite good.

Cross post about the airport transfers!!!

Very useful Nanny - cheers!
I've just booked a hotel - called The Metropolitan Hotel right in the centre, five mins walk from the bars according to my friend. £319 for 3 nights in a private single room, which I'm very pleased with. So excited - this is my first holiday in years :D

I think I walked past the Metropolitan hotel when I was in Reykjavik a couple of weeks ago. I looks fairly basic but has a great central location.

Eating and drinking out is really expensive in Iceland but there is a great fish and chip van near the harbour and a supermarket in the centre (just past the Puffin and Christmas shops).

If you want to do stuff like going in the Blue Lagoon etc make sure to book early as it is often fully booked.

AnduinsGirl · 23/07/2018 15:12

Basic is absolutely what it is :D But I'm just going to be sleeping/washing there so I don't mind so much. Excellent suggestion about the chippy van - I'm storing all these in my phone so I can make some kind of plan. I've also been advised to stock up with booze from the duty free before leaving the airport!

Hotel Fron
Basic, comfortable, clean and right in the heart of the action.

Workingmum34 · 23/07/2018 17:49

Does it need to be a hotel? We stayed at a great Airbnb place walking distance to the centre of The centre. I agree about the blue lagoon - local swimming pools are great.

Workingmum34 · 23/07/2018 17:57

Here is where we stopped. Prob too big but reasonably priced - www.airbnb.co.uk/rooms/1404202?location=Reykjav%C3%ADk%2C%20Iceland&adults=4&children=2&infants=0&home_collection=1&s=KU2KGdR9

Whoops, OP - your hotel hasn't got great reviews on Trip Advisor.
